About this listen
A remarkable vision for how Christians can live with countercultural gentleness in a perpetually angry, attacking, outraged time.
“Wow! What a great book!" (Max Lucado)
In a defensive and divided era, how can followers of Jesus reveal a better way of living, one that loves others as God loves us? How can Christians be the kind of people who are known, as Proverbs puts it, to "turn away wrath"? Scott Sauls' compelling new audiobook points the way by helping listeners:
- Grow in affection for Christ, who answers our hostility with gentleness;
- Nurture a renewed, softened heart in light of Christ's gentleness toward us;
- And forsake us-against-them mentalities, putting down our swords, and permeating a hostile world with gentleness.
For those who long for a more civil way of being, A Gentle Answer provides an inspiring and transformative path for countercultural gentleness in our perpetually angry, attacking, outraged time.
Reflection questions are available in the audiobook companion PDF download.
“I can’t think of a more needed and timely book.” (Dr. Paul David Tripp, best-selling author of New Morning Mercies)
“Reminds us of the essential and needed attribute of gentleness in a world steeped in outrage and cancel culture.” (Dr. Bryan Loritts, author of The Dad Difference)
“An urgent book for our fractured times.” (Jen Pollock Michel, award-winning author of Surprised by Paradox)

Jesus said his followers would be a light to the world and a city on a hill - a warmly inviting, neighbor-loving, grace-and-truth filled destination for all. He envisioned his followers as life-giving neighbors, bosses, employees, and friends, the kind of people who return even insults with kindness and persecution with prayers. Irresistible Faith is a blueprint for pursuing this vision in our current moment, of redeemed individuals and a renewed community working for a restored world.

Whether the issue of the day on Twitter, Facebook, or cable news is our sexuality, political divides, or the perceived conflict between faith and science, today's media pushes each one of us into a frustrating clash between two opposing sides. Polarizing, us-against-them discussions divide us and distract us from thinking clearly and communicating lovingly with others. Scott Sauls, like many of us, is weary of the bickering and is seeking a way of truth and beauty through the conflicts.

Story
Is it possible to disagree politically and love unconditionally? The reaction of evangelicals to political and cultural shifts in recent years revealed what they value most. Lurking beneath our Bible-laced rhetoric, faith claims, books, and sermons is a relentless drive to WIN! But the church is not here to win. By every human measure, our Savior lost. On purpose. With a purpose. And we are his body. We are not in it to win anything. We are in it for something else entirely. That something else is what this book is about.

Story
In this classic theological treatise, the acclaimed theologian and religious leader Howard Thurman (1900-1981) demonstrates how the gospel may be read as a manual of resistance for the poor and disenfranchised. Jesus is a partner in the pain of the oppressed and the example of His life offers a solution to ending the descent into moral nihilism. Hatred does not empower—it decays. Only through self-love and love of one another can God's justice prevail.

Story
American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?”

Forgiving anyone in a meaningful way is one of the hardest things a person has to do. If you do not, resentment and vengeance begin to consume you. It is nearly impossible to move past transgression without forgiveness, but few people have the resources and the tools to forgive others fully and move on with their lives.

During our chaotic times, discover five forgotten values that can spark internal growth and help us reconcile our Christian faith with the complexities of race, sexuality, and social justice. Most believers live in the state of "being a Christian" without ever being deeply formed by Christ. Our pace is too frenetic to be in union with God, and we don't know how to quiet our hearts and minds to be present. Our emotions are unhealthy and compartmentalized.

Significant events such as birth, marriage, and death are milestones in our lives in which we experience our greatest happiness and our deepest grief. And so it is profoundly important to understand how to approach and experience these occasions with grace, endurance, and joy. In On Birth, Timothy Keller - theologian and best-selling author - helps us understand both physical and spiritual birth, as well as how baptism connects the two. Keller draws on 45 years as a pastor and a parent to consider what it means to receive a new birth as well as to be reborn.

Story
When we live with unresolved anger or hurt, the result is nearly always bitterness, broken relationships, and unhealthy behaviors. Unforgiveness not only sabotages our interactions with those around us, it impedes our own spiritual growth and inner peace. And it can happen to anyone. In her most vulnerable writing yet, Ruth Graham reveals how a visit to Angola Prison inspired her to release the unforgiveness lurking in her own heart - toward others, herself, and even her heavenly Father and her earthly father, evangelist Billy Graham.

How is the follower of Jesus to understand the words of the Old Testament? How are those words relevant to the New Covenant he is establishing? What might the words of the Lord’s Prayer have conveyed to his initial followers, and why is that historical information essential to the prayer two millennia later? In Sermon on the Mount, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine takes a detailed and colorful overview of Matthew 5-7, collectively known as Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount.

Shalom is what God declared. Shalom is what the Kingdom of God looks like. Shalom is when all people have enough. It's when churches, schools, and public policies protect human dignity. Shalom is when the image of God is recognized in every single human. Shalom is our calling as followers of Jesus' gospel. What can we do to bring shalom to our nations, our communities, and our souls? Through a careful exploration of biblical text, particularly the first three chapters of Genesis, Lisa Sharon Harper shows us what "very good" can look like today, even after the Fall.

An important book for a particularly acrimonious season
As a Christian, this book clearly lays out why we have no reason to be part of the current vitriol, and that it is our duty to demonstrate patience and kindness regardless of the spite coming our way. Well worth the time.

No weakness here just a gentle way
This book is not a weak Jesus book but instead very strong as it shows us how giving a gentle answer, in various ways, is following the ways of Jesus. In this confrontational world the author points out the value and importance of gentle answers instead of harsh ones. I’ve enjoyed it and been challenged by it.

Good author
I like the message the author has. As a Christian I know my imperfections can turn others away. Also others the same as I. The authors teachings are very enlightening 😇👍

A Timely Book for our culture
As I listened to this book, I began to realize that I was making a serious mistake by thinking that this book would really help someone else. When in actuality, I have come to realize that Everytime,I have a conversation with someone or enter into a dialogue on Social media, I need the principles outlined in this book. And everything that is talked about here is backed up by scripture.

Interesting
Always interesting to read a book that uses worth loving since they can be claimed as the the worst of what could be. May good points in here as well, especially about the “reasons for the shift”. Not a bad book st all. It does however reinforce the very thinking it’s gently try to deter from, “us and them”.

Best book I’ve read this year.
This book had a profound impact on me. It exposed things that I need to change my life, and helped me interpret this cultural moment. I came away with a powerful conviction that the gentle answer modeled by Jesus is the true path of a disciple in an age of outrage.
