About this listen

For more than half a century, in such books as The Art of Happiness and The Dalai Lama's Little Book of Inner Peace, the Dalai Lama has guided us along the path to compassion and taught us how to improve our inner lives. In A Force for Good, with the help of his longtime friend Daniel Goleman, the New York Times best-selling author of Emotional Intelligence, the Dalai Lama explains how to turn our compassionate energy outward. This revelatory and inspiring work provides a singular vision for transforming the world in practical and positive ways.

Much more than just the most prominent exponent of Tibetan Buddhism, the 14th Dalai Lama is also a futurist who possesses a profound understanding of current events and a remarkable canniness for modern social issues. When he takes the stage worldwide, people listen. A Force for Good combines the central concepts of the Dalai Lama, empirical evidence that supports them, and true stories of people who are putting his ideas into action - showing how harnessing positive energies and directing them outward has lasting and meaningful effects. Goleman details the science of compassion and how this singular guiding motivation has the power to:

  • Break such destructive social forces as corruption, collusion, and bias
  • Heal the planet by refocusing our concerns toward our impact on the systems that support all life
  • Reverse the tendency toward systemic inequity through transparency and accountability
  • Replace violence with dialogue
  • Counter us-and-them thinking by recognizing human oneness
  • Create new economic systems that work for everyone, not just the powerful and rich
  • Design schooling that teaches empathy, self-mastery, and ethics

An Imperative Message

Mr Goleman is gifting a very hopeful and vital message to all of us in this book. He tells us about the progress of the Dalai Lama 's message to the world for many decades and how he still, today remains vigilant inciting the youth to carry his message into the 21st century.

loved the story. so inspiring!

I love Daniel's books, but his reading was a little hard to follow in a few places. I like his voice but ennunciation wasn't crisp enough at times.
it's such a great story and wonderful to hear about so many amazing people, programs, and schools out there changing the world for the better.

Loved it! Highly recommended.

I was surprised by how many viewpoints the Dalai Lama and I have in common. I also really appreciated the writing style, tone, and mannerisms of Daniel Goleman, the narrator and author.

Informative and inspiring

This book is a well written and carefully researched manifesto that seeks to convey details about he Dalai Lama's vision for our world. Not every word is his. However, the author is very careful to stay true to the vision expressed by the Dalai Lama through his words and deeds. A solid and worthwhile read. The audible version is well produced. Highly recommended.

Very Disappointing. Misleading Description.

Would you try another book from Daniel Goleman and/or Daniel Goleman?

No. I felt the title and the description were very misleading. I was expecting "The Dalai Lama's Vision for Our World" not chapter after chapter of the scientific research and opinions of others that had absolutely nothing or almost nothing to link to the Dalai Lama.

Would you ever listen to anything by Daniel Goleman again?

No plans to read anything else by him.

What about Daniel Goleman’s performance did you like?

He reads well, but is anything but inspiring.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Very disappointed. I get the impression that the book was to promote the agenda and thoughts of Daniel Goleman. Who just used the name of the Dalai Lama simply to generate sales.

Any additional comments?

Let me say that I have read much by the Dalai Lama and always enjoyed it. I had high hopes for this book based on the title and description. But the Dalai Lama' thoughts and ideas make up about 20% of the content. The bulk of the book is made up of dozens and dozens of research, experiments, and reports by others. While I found the page after page of studies and facts interesting, they were simply off topic for me.
