Publisher's summary

Mr. Bennet had very often wished that, instead of spending his whole income, he had laid by an annual sum for the better provision of his children, and of his wife, if she survived him. Alas, he did not live long enough to do it. After her father’s untimely death, Miss Elizabeth Bennet reads a letter from him in which he tasks her with the protection of her family. Elizabeth is willing to do everything in her power to fulfill her father's dying wish, even if it means marrying a man she cannot love. There is, however, one man whom she can love. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. The two start out as friends, but Mr. Darcy wants more. Much more. Surely Elizabeth will not always sacrifice her own happiness for the sake of her family. Or will she?

In this variation, Mr Bennett has died and Elizabeth is entrusted with the care and welfare of her mother and sisters. Elizabeth meet Darcy in Kent instead of Hertfordshire. They fall in love while Elizabeth is trying to get out of a marriage to Mr Collins.

Benjamin Fife did a wonderful job with the narration. He brought the story to life!

Elizabeth gets a sneak peek!

4.5* rounded up
After Mr. Bennet dies, Elizabeth is left in charge of her family until the heir comes to claim Longbourn. Determined not to marry him, she maneuvers Mary into his path instead while they are at Rosings under Lady Catherine’s scrutiny, and where Elizabeth meets Darcy for the first time in a book shop. I really enjoyed this Darcy, who falls for Elizabeth quickly, yet there is no Hunsford moment at all. I will confess to a snicker when Elizabeth inadvertently walks into the wrong bedchamber at Rosings and receives a bit of a shock. I further confess I was a little disappointed a similar scene wasn’t repeated in the epilogue once they were married.

There’s a new villain who makes himself known due to Lydia’s propensity to be stupid, and even Wickham appears to have his say. Darcy-in-charge adequately takes care of them both. Benjamin Fife’s narration and performance brought out the best of this story.
