This Book Saved My Family

If you're reading this review, you're in a difficult situation, just like I am. For me, we moved my mother in with us when my father passed, and she now has full blown Alzheimer's dementia. As you know, it's painful to be the person affected, and just as painful, though differently, to be the family members.

Our family was exhausted, frustrated, and blaming each other for all the "shoulds" we each thought were being missed. We argued about care, style, and more. We didn't have any respite care givers, and we didn't have a plan for how to enjoy the time we have left together. Then we listened to this book. First me, then my husband, and then my two teenage children.

This book helps you navigate all of the resources you didn't know exist to help you! It explains how to love and support your family member even in the most trying times. And it helps you understand that there is no "perfect" journey through dementia, but there are ways to make everyone feel supported, loved, seen, and understood.

It's still difficult - I don't want to pretend it isn't. But we're not drowning in it anymore. We have a more effective plan, we've joined a support group (huge!) and we have more effective conversations with her doctor. We also use a respite care service, so we can all have some occasional rest while we know Mom is ok. Mom seems less agitated, probably because we've learned some strategies to support her, and each other, better.

If you're still reading, read this book. It will help your family, and it will help you maximize your remaining time with your loved one.

Helpful, Compassionate Advice

This well-written and thorough book gives a supportive yet realistic view of how to be a caregiver to someone in your family diagnosed with dementia. It begins with explaining the different types of dementia and how that affects the plans to manage it through the first signs of the disease and the myths surrounding dementia. It also guides how to cope and manage care, navigate the healthcare system, and, most importantly, where to get help. There is also information about the person central approach to caring for the patient, making activities - no matter how small - memorable for a personal connection with your loved one, and much more. Overall, it is an excellent guide for anyone facing these challenges.
