About this listen
This emotional and honest book explores a racist encounter from the perspective of a young Black boy, while offering a message of unconditional love and acceptance to soothe the pain of blind prejudice.
In this story based on the author's childhood, a young Black boy confronts his first experience of overt racism. In recounting the events to his grandfather, the young narrator asks: “How can she hate me when she doesn’t know me?” Grandpa offers wisdom and encouragement to the child, reminding him that another person’s hate does not change the fact that he is loved and that he matters. While offering an unflinching look at the emotional impact of the encounter, Tyler Merritt presents a message of love and acceptance that will resonate with young listeners and offer a starting point for conversations about racial equality between parent or caregiver and child.

Story
America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

Story
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

Now, in his debut essay collection, Black gives voice to the experiences of those who often find themselves on the margins. Tackling topics ranging from police brutality to the AIDS crisis to the role of HBCUs to queer representation in the black church, Black on Black celebrates the resilience, fortitude, and survival of black people in a land where their body is always on display.

John Crist wasn’t always recognizable as “the guy from that hilarious video in the grocery store.” Growing up part of a homeschool family of ten in rural Georgia with Mennonite grandparents and a high-school job at Chick-fil-A, he was an unlikely candidate for internet fame. Despite all that, or perhaps because of it, Crist passionately pursued his dream of stand-up comedy. In Delete That, Crist takes responsibility for his actions, offers some reflections on how to do better, and encourages us all to stop capitulating to the fear of “But what will they think?!”

Story
Today - as repeated attempts to “fix ourselves and our lives” fail - many of us face unprecedented fears about the future, struggle with unspeakable life tragedies, and sink under the belief that certain lives do not matter in our society. Others confront our epidemic of anxiety with fierce resistance, or “the fight to be right”, criticizing anyone and everyone just to end up stuck. In the face of such pervasive human suffering, New York Times best-selling author and legendary life coach Iyanla Vanzant challenges us: What if it’s not them - what if it’s you?

Story
For two centuries, the deep-seated fear that many White people feel—of losing power, of losing economic standing, of losing a particular “way of life”—has been the driving force behind American politics and culture. And as we approach a future where White people will become a racial minority in the US, something estimated to occur as early as 2043, that fear is only intensifying, festering, and becoming more visible. Are we destined for a violent clash? What can we do to step into our country’s inevitable future, without tearing ourselves apart in the process?

Not just for children
Tyler’s story serves to remind us that behind every door is an opportunity to change the world! The lessons discussed are applicable to all ages, reminding us that we should always open doors for others.
Listen with all the children in your life, share the message that we are all worthy of walking through any door! Thank you for sharing your heart Tyler!!

A book for adults too!
I love Tyler Merritt’s I Take My Coffee Black and I was so happy to hear he made a children’s book. I knew I would listen but also wasn’t sure what I would take from it as an adult. This is a beautifully important story of how we can all do our part to stand up for others and invite them to sit at the table together with us instead of slamming doors in their faces because of the color of their skin or anything else that makes them “different.” I feel like adults actually need to hear this more than little kids!! I needed that reminder too. But I also needed to hear the rest of his message. Not all of us were told we were special as kids or that we mattered. And let me tell you, the way Tyler says it in this reading makes you believe it. Get this book and share it. Listen to it over and over again. Come back to it when you’re having a tough day. And go read or listen to I Take My Coffee Black. Trust me, you need Tyler Merritt in your life!

A Door Made for EVERYONE!
I read this book to my 9 year old daughter and we talked extensively on what this means to her after overhearing that kids were calling her, “weird”. Here is a quote from her:
“It means that we need to keep our emotional doors open because sometimes someone may need a little boost. I liked the audiobook because it was from his heart and it was very loving and affectionate.”
This book needs to be read in tandem with the audiobook, (spoiler alert: except you have to skip over the dedication and read that at the end!). I always thought I was decent at reading aloud, but Tyler Merritt, as he does, always takes things to Level 11 and knocks it out of the ballpark!
It’s a wonderful book for social emotional learning and a great choice to be adopted in school programs as well. I’m actively trying to have it be considered for our school’s social emotional program!
Do not hesitate to buy this in tandem with his other book, “I Take My Coffee Black”, which is a life changing memoir for a more mature audience!

The content! The words! The feeling!
These inspiring words are for children with brown, or mahogany skin that shine bright in the sunshine, moonlight and in the face of racism. Thank you💜

Buy a copy for every child.
Just downloaded this little book and listen to it on audible because I had heard such sweet things about it. What a story…. One that will resonate with so many children. I was the jack in the story when I was a child. I was invited in when my friend was not. By this, listen to this, and then, open the doors wide for everyone! Beautifully written, Tyler merit!!
