About this listen

It's 1944, and World War II is raging through Europe. Lieutenant Bradford Reimer, forced to leave his wife and ill daughter in Pennsylvania, finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his men in the Battle of the Bulge. As they escape certain death, they end up in the Belgian Village of Ciel, where they meet a kindly old man named Nikolaas.

The war seems not to have touched this village, but Reimer and his men soon learn that there is more to the old man and the village that meets the eye, and each of them begin to learn something about who they truly are. Reimer, too, learns that his lost faith, and the meaning of Christmas, is not lost forever, but he merely needs to be shown the way through the fog of war and his rage.

Great story!

Harry's best book...so far. It's eerie, but in a good way. Keeps you engaged and wondering what's next...Lovable characters who learn a life lesson while fighting the Nazis together. A really enjoyable read.

Edge of your seat and emotional story

Bradford Reimer loathes Christmas and all it stands for; he has lost his faith. Forced to leave his ill daughter and wife behind as he goes to fight in WWII, it is here amidst the death and violence that Reimer begins to understand faith. Pushed beyond his limits, Reimer is reminded that he is not alone. Aided by a grandfatherly village man along with his granddaughter, Reimer begins to find his faith. However, it is not until he returns home that he discovers the full extent of the power of faith and the mysterious power faith holds. This story also has a supernatural/paranormal feel to it at times.

I despise crying and this book made me cry! The author, Harry Karapalides, builds a strong story of faith and redemption. The listener cannot help but be drawn into the story and feel the pain and confusion, love, and fears that Reimer carries with each step. Karapalides carefully built each character to reinforce the power of faith and redemption. This is a powerful story that will have you, the listener, looking more closely at your life, passion, love, and faith.

The narrator, David Scott Jarvis, provides each character with a unique voice and captures the personality and presence of each character expertly. How he kept from crying is beyond me! I liked his pace, he spoke methodically, clearly, and with a rich voice. Between the author and narrator, this was a nail-biting story.

This is one of those stories that tug at your heartstrings and beliefs with a twinge or two of the supernatural. This was a good book that holds your attention in a variety of ways, I look forward to more by Karapalides!
