From the USA Today bestselling author comes a gripping new emotional WW2 historical novel. Inspired by a true story!
‘Easily my favorite historical novel of the year If you love WWII fiction, this is a must read’ Soraya M. Lane, Amazon Charts bestselling author of Wives of War and The Last Correspondent
Rumours of the Nazis coming for Czech children swept through the villages like a breeze through the trees, and the story was always the same…They wanted our children to raise as their own
Since her husband, Josef, joined the Czech resistance three years ago, Anna Dankova has done everything possible to keep her daughter, Ema, safe. But when blonde haired, blue-eyed Ema is ripped from her mother’s arms in the local marketplace by the dreaded Brown Sisters, nurses who were dedicated to Hitler’s cause, Anna is forced to go to new extremes to take back what the Nazis have stolen from her.
Going undercover as a devoted German subject eager to prove her worth to the Reich, the former actress takes on a role of a lifetime to find and save her daughter. But getting close to Ema is one thing. Convincing her that the Germans are lying when they claim Anna stole her from her true parents is another…
'Pulls you in on page one and never lets go! A chilling look at a Nazi program most of us have never even heard of…Historical fans will love this one!' Sara Ackerman, USA Today bestselling author of The Codebreaker's Secret
'Oh my heart! This was such a poignant and powerful story…It will stay with me for a long time.' – Gill Thompson, USA Today bestselling author of The Lighthouse Sisters

In Nazi-occupied Poland, Sofia cannot look her father in the eye. Sofia’s mother, her papa’s cherished wife, is Jewish—how dare he work as a doctor for the SS? She cannot forgive him, even if the bargain was made to spare their lives. In the middle of the night, Isaac emerges from a packed train with hundreds of others. Beneath Auschwitz’s barbed wire, the SS decide prisoners’ fates on the spot—and Isaac is chosen to work. Every breath feels like it could be Isaac’s last, so when he sees a beautiful auburn-haired girl peering out of the farm window, it feels like a dream.

As the war begins, Hanna Rombauer, a young German woman, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. It was a misty Wednesday morning. Inside the Gestapo headquarters, you could cut the tension with a knife. There was a traitor in their midst: Someone had leaked a list of the SS to the British press. The head of the Gestapo called me into his office. Panelled oak walls, a grand piano in the corner, rugs lining the floor—the place where he ordered executions every day.

Heart gripping, heroic, and finally some bit of a happy ending in a WW2 novel
I know most stories did not have a happy ending in WW2. This one, while still having so many tragic turns and twists, didn’t make me a blubbering mess at the end of the story. It had light in the darkness. The narrator was quite immersive and the story was one to remember.

Emotionally heart wrenching
Loved the story, the characterization of Anna was great. I wish there was more to Paula’s motivations and on what happened to Dasha and Matka.

Enjoyed the novel
Narrative was a bit too intense for me. The sense of urgency in her voice was grating
