Publisher's summary

Tariq Trotter, a.k.a. Black Thought, sits firmly within the pantheon of hip-hop’s greatest MCs. But the cofounder of the multiplatinum-selling hip-hop band The Roots is best understood not through all trophies and awards, but the sheer weight of his lyrical force.

In 7 Years, Trotter’s new addition to Audible’s Words + Music series, the prolific rapper examines his life and career in dynamic seven-year increments. Featuring a powerful and personal musical score, Trotter takes listeners through his intimate journey, including his tumultuous childhood in Philadelphia, facing off with a justice system that was stacked against him, and adapting to commercial success in mainstream America. Mixing complex rhymes with searing insight, 7 Years finds a singular creative voice opening up and speaking volumes.

A look in the life of a living legend

This is such a fantastic listen. It's art, storytelling, poetry wrapped in one. It felt like cooked food (if you know you know). This was such a beautiful experience. Trotter is simply brilliant. Give this man a Master Class please!

If you love Tariq and the Roots, you'll love this!

I'm a big fan of Tariq's so listening to him tell his story was a gift. Really gives insight to growing up in Philly, becoming an artist and still having to overcome barriers and systems that must change. The music woven throughout is wonderful. Thank you!

Blueprint for Artists

I thoroughly enjoyed the format and delivery of this audiobook. I thought Tariq bravely and boldly presented a concise autobiography x sketchbook that deepens my appreciation of his art. This IMHO should be a blueprint for many artists. Beings we want to hear more from, beyond their primary product. And we want to hear it from their hearts, not filtered thru a reporter’s pen. Great listen that I’ll pass on to my many friends who share my love for the Legendary Roots Crew.

Wow

Black Thought takes the listener on an introspective journey through his life. Backed by sonic sounds of the Roots crew his dynamic voice and storytelling keeps you entranced. Oh yeah - eight minutes of hot tunes at the end to sop up the gravy.

Keeping it real

Nice to see a brother coming up. The rhythms and music were a bonus. I also liked Trotter's acknowledgment of those who helped him along the way, always count your blessings and let folks know, especially the woman by your side.

Loved it!

It felt like an autobiographical mixtape. Nice blend of storytelling, life lessons, and music. It makes me look back on my life, and noticed the shifts.
