あらすじ
パノラマ島綺譚
M県にある沖の島では数年前から不思議な工事が進められていた。
今はM県随一の富豪菰田家の持ち物であるその島で何が起こっているか、噂にはなっても大きく騒がれることもなかった。
島には土塀が築かれ、内部に池や川や丘や谷があり、その中央には鉄筋コンクリートの巨大な建物まで建てられた。
ところがこの事業は思わぬ出来事のためにとん挫したのである。
それは菰田家の当主と主人の死であった。
実はこの背景には隠された物語があったのである――。
人見廣介という三文文士がいた。
彼は菰田家の当主・菰田源三郎の死を知るが、人見は菰田とは大学の同窓で、二人は瓜二つだと噂になっていたのだ。
菰田は癲癇のために死んだのだが、人見は癲癇で死んだ者が棺桶や墓の中で息を吹き返すという話を読んだ記憶があった。
そして、菰田の亡骸が土葬されていることを知ると、自身が蘇生した菰田に成り代わり、その莫大な財産を手に理想通りの楽園を創造するという野望を叶えようと目論んだのだった……
一枚の切符
左右田五郎は、ある事件について話していた。彼はちょうどその現場に居合わせたのだという。
十月十日の午前四時、富田博士邸裏の鉄道線路で、富田博士の妻である婦人が列車に轢かれて亡くなった。
懐中に遺書があり、自身の病気を苦に自殺をする旨がしたためられていたが、黒田清太郎という刑事はそれを疑って捜査を進めた。
黒田刑事は証拠を元に、この事件が自殺ではなく富田博士による他殺であると推理する。
そして夫人の遺体からは毒物が検出されたのであった。
しかし、左右田はこの結果を疑い、現場で拾った「一枚の切符」で博士の無実を証明してみせる、と言うのであった……
