About this listen
Best-selling author Patrick O'Brian became a legend with his beloved Aubrey-Maturin seafaring tales. O'Brian received further attention with the critically acclaimed film adaptation, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and won two.
When O'Brian passed away in 2000, he left behind three chapters of what was to be the 21st Aubrey-Maturin novel. The tale was to have followed Jack Aubrey in his new post, Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron.
Although it remains unfinished, 21 gives us one final glance at the unparalleled genius of a master craftsman and the series The New York Times Book Review hailed as "the best historical novels ever written".
Don't miss the rest of the Aubrey/Maturin series.©2004 Patrick O'Brian (P)2004 Recorded Books, LLCListeners also enjoyed...

"You seriously mean to tell me that the ship is doomed?" asked Frank Worsley, commander of the Endurance, stuck impassably in Antarctic ice packs. "What the ice gets," replied Sir Ernest Shackleton, the expedition's unflappable leader, "the ice keeps." It did not, however, get the ship's twenty-five crew members, all of whom survived an eight-hundred-mile voyage across sea, land, and ice to South Georgia, the nearest inhabited island.

Story
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

It is 1780, and 17-year-old Alan Lewrie is a brash, rebellious young libertine. So much so that his callous father believes a bit of naval discipline will turn the boy around. Fresh aboard the tall-masted Ariadne, Midshipman Lewrie heads for the war-torn Americas, finding - rather unexpectedly - that he is a born sailor, equally at home with the randy pleasures of the port and the raging battles on the high seas. But in a hail of cannonballs comes a bawdy surprise.

This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

John Paul Jones is more than a great sea story. Jones is a character for the ages. John Adams called him the "most ambitious and intriguing officer in the American Navy." The renewed interest in the Founding Fathers reminds us of the great men who made this country, but John Paul Jones teaches us that it took fighters as well as thinkers, men driven by dreams of personal glory as well as high-minded principle to break free of the past and start a new world. Jones' spirit was classically American.

What was daily life in Nelson's navy really like, for everyone from the captain down to the rawest recruit? What did they eat? What songs did they sing? What was the schedule of watches? How were the officers and crew paid, and what was the division of prize-money? These questions and many more are answered in Patrick O'Brian's elegant narrative, which includes wonderful anecdotal material on the battles and commanders that established Britain's naval supremacy.

As fitting as it gets.
For those of us who have enjoyed each installment of the Aubry/Maturin series, I think this final glimpse is fitting enough an end. Our consummate heroes would have presumably died of old age surrounded by grand, or great, grandchildren and of course each other. Had Patrick O'Brian begun the writing at the age of five, he may have been granted enough time to finish the story in it's entirety. But as it is Admiral Aubry and Dr. Matruin will continue to sail the seas in the minds of the reader.
Patrick Tull's reading of this final episode also shows that his excellent recreation of the world of Patrick O'Brian could not go on indefinitely. His age shows with every sentence. He sounds a bit like he has just returned from the dentist, after having half of his teeth removed. But after spending so many hours with the story one must finish it regardless.
It would also be inconsiderate to mention literary errors that would certainly been corrected by O'Brian before it's final version, and release. There are certain inconsistencies that one notices after spending countless hours getting to know O'Brian and Tull. But given the circumstances these can be overlooked.
The series taken as a whole is well worth the time it takes to get through it. And I'm glad to have finished it. Five stars from beginning to end.

The Sad Ending Of My Journey In The English Navy
What's there to say? Realizing that I will no longer be sailing with Captain Jack Aubrey and Dr. Maturin was a great shock. To be marooned on land without the voice of Patrick Tull to lull me to sleep floating on the ocean rollers in anticipation of the next great adventures with these two characters will be hard. But.... nothing lasts forever... but OH! what voyages they were! Don't miss out on these great sea-going stories, you will be sorry!

A very short 21
I was disappointed that the audible“book”, I bought was more of a very few chapters from an author whose 20 book adventures I have enjoyed so thoroughly that I have purchased them all in the original book format.
Imagine my joy when, after many years I discovered the title “The Golden Ocean”. After consuming the story, much the same as men rescued from many days in the ocean, will with food and drink.
After many years of trying the various combined efforts of Mr. O’Brian and other authors, (I found like the ships crew’s experience with the yellow cabbage on Desolation Island), you can survive on it, but it’s not going to leave the same taste as what you’re used to.
I heard of this title, my heart soared with great happiness and expectations of the joy to come. Only to be splintered in the same manner as a 32 lb. chaser at close quarters will do to a wooden ship, by the farcical notion of this title being a book, THREE chapters and a commentary as long or longer that the chapters, doesn’t a book make.

a bittersweet farewell
I previously read all in this series, except this one, unwilling to hear the end of Jack and Stephen's lives. Now having listened to all of the books (and I must say I enjoyed hearing them enormously, due to Patrick Tull's fine readings), I recommend this book to any fan of O'Brian. There is no closure in the story, which is fine with me. I can imagine further adventures, and perhaps someone will take up the series in the future. The abrupt termination is, however in a way, not unsatisfying. Like everyone else, I wish there were more, but this book gave some type of finish--for the moment.

Like great music
I have “read” the entire series at least four times either in print or voice and never tire of it. Like listening to great music beautifully performed.
Only disappointment was brief appearance of someone other than Patric Tull narrating. I could not get past 2 chapters.
