「夢の卵」
遠い昔のこと、インドに若く美しい王子がいました。王子は夜眠ってから、夢を見るのが大好きで、翌朝になると夢の話を皆に話して聞かせるのでした。
しかし、夢の話ばかりする王子を心配した王様は、 「夢は、みな不確かな嘘ばかりで、眼がさめると消えてなくなるではないか」 と言って、学問に励むよう言うのでした。この言葉に納得できない王子は、夢も学問と同様に本当のことだと証明するために、夢を捕まえてやろうと息巻くのでしたが……
「コーカサスの禿鷹」
コーカサスに一匹の大きな禿鷹がいました。仲間の者たちと一緒に高い山の頂に住んでいましたが、ある日ふと、こう考えたのです。
「自分は仲間の誰よりも、体が大きく、力が強く、知恵もあるので、みんなから尊敬されている。そこで一つ奮発して、みんなよりも立派な住居をこしらえて、王様然と構えこんでいなくちゃなるまい」
そして、彼はこの国中で一番高い山の頂に立派な岩屋を探してそこに住もうとしましたが、どれが一番高い山か、見当がつかずにいました。そこで国中の山の霊たちに聞いて回ったものの、皆「俺だ」と言うのでわかりません。そこで禿鷹は山の神の知恵を借りようとするのですが……

1890‐1955。小説家、翻訳家、児童文学作家、福岡県生まれ。
東京帝国大学仏文科卒業。在学中の1914年、第三次『新思潮』創刊号に『湖水と彼等』を発表して評価される。以降も教職についてフランス文学を教える傍らで、数多くの小説、童話を発表した。
