Fictional true crime story
For a student of Japanese language, this book requires about N2 level reading comprehension. There is a large cast of characters, each with their own backstory and web of relationships. The book is told partly in third person, partly through interviews with police, partly through dialogue. It is a work of fiction that has the feel of a documentary. There is a lot of commentary on Japanese society circa 1996. I think this book will appeal to fans of true crime novels, and to fans of family drama. There are no fights, chases, or Matlock style confrontations. The story starts with a quadruple murder, and follows the story of everyone who was impacted or implicated. The drama of the narrative is how the true backstory and fallout is gradually revealed.
