光源氏 十七歳
主な登場人物 空蝉
中川の皐月(さつき)の水に人似たり
かたればむせび寄ればわななく
五月雨の夕刻、十七歳になった光源氏は、頭中将（とうのちゅうじょう）たちとともに、女性についての議論に花を咲かせていた。「雨夜の品定め」といわれる場面である。
それぞれが自分の体験や過去に関わった女性の話をする中で、頭中将は、女性は「中の品」（中流）が一番良いと言い、子どもを設けながらも正妻の嫌がらせによって姿を消してしまった内縁の妻のことを語るのだった。
翌日、源氏は方違えのために訪れた中川の辺りにある紀伊守の屋敷で、伊予守（いよのかみ）の後妻である空蟬（うつせみ）と出会い、強引に空蟬と一夜を共にする。 その後も、源氏は空蟬を忘れることができず、切々と恋心を訴えるのだが、かたくなに拒否をする空蟬の決意は固いのであった。
