全７章からなる中島敦の短編小説。
自らが親族の中で最も影響を受けた伯父の晩年をもとに、甥の目線から綴られた私記的な作品。
作中に登場する「三造」は中島自身を投影しており、自己分析的な面も持っている。
江戸生まれの伯父「斗南先生」は幼少期から非常に優秀な人物であったが、変わり者でもあった。
その甥である三造は、伯父と似通うものを感じ密かに自己嫌悪的な反発心を抱いていた。
しかし、死を目前にした伯父との交流や死後の出来事を通して気持ちを整理し、伯父への深い情に気づくのであった。
中島敦（なかじま・あつし）
昭和時代前期の小説家。1909年東京生れ。東大国文科卒。
祖父は漢学者中島撫山、伯父にも漢学者が多く、父は中学の漢文教師。
1933年横浜高等女学校の教師となり、かたわら作家を志して習作にはげんだ。
持病の喘息悪化のため、転地療養を兼ねて41年パラオの南洋庁に赴任する。
唐代の伝奇「人虎伝」を素材にした「山月記」が深田久弥の推挽で42年2月の「文学界」に掲載され文壇にデビュー。同年5月発表の《光と風と夢》も好評で以後創作に専念。
パラオ南洋庁書記の職を辞して作家生活に入ろうとしたが、同年12月持病の喘息のために夭折した。代表作に「李陵(りりょう)」「弟子」「光と風と夢」など。
