<あらすじ>
江戸で五本の指に入るほど腕の良い植木職人だった源次は、ある日、依頼された朴ノ木を半月ほど捜し回って家に帰って来た。その際、妻と些細なやり取りを交わす。自分の望んでいなかった態度を妻に取られたことを発端に、妻子を捨て、さらには植木職人としての将来まで捨ててしまう。
「――おらあもう、あとのねえ仮名だ、ゑひもせすで仮名は終わりだからな」源次はそう言い、空虚で堕落した生活を送り続けるのだった……。
自分が自覚している自分の姿と、他人が「あの人はこういう人だ」と認識している姿とのずれに苦悩する源次の姿は、現代を生きる私たちにも通じるものがあるのではないでしょうか。
山本周五郎の最晩年の傑作です。周五郎の作家人生の終着点にあたる作品で、周五郎は何を伝えたかったのか、ぜひお聴きください。
山本周五郎(やまもと・しゅうごろう)
1903~67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。
