Story
An alcoholic teacher and father’s world spirals out of control when a former student is killed and he is left with her dog and the dark presence that follows it. Matt Matheny teaches during the day, drinks at night, and barely hides his functioning alcoholism from his veterinarian ex-wife, Lucy, and his six-year-old son, Mikey. His world spirals out of control when a former student is killed, and he's left with her dog, Conehead. But something isn't right with Conehead.

Narrator is great.
What I don’t love:
The story uses the same type of sentence structure throughout. Paraphrase: “he did such and such a thing, then he put this here, then it went on top of the other thing, and into the other thing.”
The author gives tedious details, almost as if trying to fill pages. This makes the imagery much less colorful than it could be. The descriptions of the scary bits are BARELY more interesting than the descriptions of the main character walking around his house doing normal things.
The story kind of plods along.
If I were reading this instead of listening to it, it would put me to sleep pretty quickly.
This one’s a little weak for this genre.

Grandpappy is on hospice. Charles is going mad. Vile happenings are abound. You, listener, are not prepared. This is your lesson in depravity. Warning! This is an extreme horror novella. Very few triggers are left unpulled.

Solid. Not the best of PCH3, but solid.

Grotesquely beautiful descriptions. It goes off the rails a bit at the end but the concept is very original. Narrator needs an Oscar! The deadpan delivery really made it work.

This genre has better options.
Could be more descriptive. It’s tiresome. Too much setup in most of the stories. Not as shocking as the intro over-promises.

Triggers - pregnancy loss
Reviewed: 08-06-23
I was fine with it, and even liked it, until there was violence on an unborn — not making it political, I’m pro choice — but it’s just hard to hear that part when you’ve lost a pregnancy. I can handle everything else but that. Talented writer, though. I just have to push that part out of my mind to continue.

How did this get published with the narrator repeatedly saying the phrase “Ec-Cetera?”
It’s got a “t” in it….

Narrator is weird. Talks too fast, I can’t follow the story. And the story takes forever to unfold. Don’t waste your time.

Every single example features boys. What gives? I want to know if little girls communicate differently. Maybe they do and the author doesn’t have the experience...
