But I really liked about this story is that every fact that you thought was ridiculous fiction, turned out to be true. Including one of the main characters being delivered to the morgue after an accident only to be found still breathing by the mortician.

I really enjoyed another view and stories from WW II. The family and women’s relationships draw you as did the history of British pilots trained in the US.

Story
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Characters are 3 dimensional. You love them, hate them, get angry at them. In other words that are real people. In addition to providing historic and cultural context to the issues of big pharm, addiction, redemption and families how ever they come to be.

As always with LAU unforgettable characters who are flawed and beautiful. The writing makes you continue to think about the story and the characters long after the book is finished. Even better that the genesis of the story was his mothers own experiences.

Story
Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Mean Chey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash. Life would be hard enough without the worry for their chronically ill child, Nisay, and the added expense of medicines that are not working. Just when things seem worst, Sang Ly learns a secret about the ill-tempered rent collector who comes demanding money - a secret that sets in motion a tide that will change the life of everyone it sweeps past.

This book started a little show for me and then I couldn’t stop listening. Hearing the book with the names and places in Cambodia said correctly was a huge benefit over reading it.
