Story
The second in this hilarious cozy mystery series features a woman who is a talent agent for showbiz animals and discovers that she has a talent herself: solving crimes. Kay Powell, theatrical agent to non-human animals, is babysitting - that is, birdsitting - her client, a parrot named Barney, on the set of his new TV show, Dead City. When the show’s charismatic star is shot in his trailer between scenes, the only eyewitness to the crime is - you guessed it - Barney.

Contrived story
Reviewed: 01-07-24
The narrator was good so it was not unenjoyable but the story line was convoluted and contrived. None of the characters were very relatable so it was hard to have much concern about the person who has been murdered or the resolution. The bird is the highlight of the story.

Story
Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

Turning despair into hope
Reviewed: 06-19-23
If you like good character stories and looking at the truths of the human condition, this book does that with a good sense of humor and a bit of suspense. It drags you to the depths of human despair but leads you out and then leaves you hopeful and looking at the resilience of the human spirit in community. The narrator does a great job with so many “characters” among the characters. You’ll laugh out loud at some of them. I enjoyed this very much.

A fantastical ride
Reviewed: 06-15-23
I very much enjoyed the many weeks that I spent living among the Torrent family, learning their relationships, hearing their joys and struggles, and trying to solve these mysteries along with them. This is a nice, light-hearted, “realistic” style fantasy set in present day coastal NC with strong female characters, plenty of humor and magic, but no rape or gore. There is good character development and relational growth among the characters. There are “murders” but, they are just a fact, not scenes described in bloody detail. It seems like it’s harder and harder to find something like this that is pure entertainment without needing to shock you with horror. I really appreciate that. The narrator is very good and she keeps consistent voices for each character all the way through the 10 book series. The afterward by the author is a nice wrap up. I wish there were 10 more books. Enjoy!

Story
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A wonderful story about love and loss… and how the heart slowly heals and new life and love grows with perseverance. Nice to have an old woman and a sea creature as a story’s heroes. Uplifting and well narrated. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

Story
In 1970s Baltimore, 14-year-old Mary Jane loves cooking with her mother, singing in her church choir, and enjoying her family’s subscription to the Broadway Showtunes of the Month record club. Shy, quiet, and bookish, she’s glad when she lands a summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a local doctor. A respectable job, Mary Jane’s mother says. In a respectable house.

I enjoyed this story all the way, being a child of the 70s myself. I wish I had had any such experience as a young teen that made me understand myself or gave me confidence to challenge my own family’s values. I didn’t … but I enjoyed living vicariously through Mary Jane. The narrator did an excellent job and sounds like she really IS Mary Jane. Well done!

The story here is good and the narrator is excellent. But the production has added some terrible music overlay that is very distracting and incongruent with the story and tone and sometimes loud enough that it’s hard to hear the narrator. Fortunately, it’s only at the beginning and ending of each chapter. The story is worth this annoyance– an interesting exploration on the topic of soul mates and what to do if you find one...

Story
Working with thousands of patients, Dr. Gundry has discovered that the “diseases of aging” we most fear are not simply a function of age; rather, they are a byproduct of the way we have lived over the decades. In The Longevity Paradox, he maps out a new approach to aging well - one that is based on supporting the health of the “oldest” parts of us: the microorganisms that live within our bodies.

A lot of info for audio format
Reviewed: 03-06-20
This book might be better in printed or e-form as there is so much detailed info. The pdf supplement is helpful but doesn’t include many things to which I would like to refer for review, the exercise program, for example. The science is well rounded by the anecdotal stories for an easy and interesting listen. The author is well suited to presenting the audiobook.
