Story
The Lowlands’ city states have lived in peace for decades, hailed as bastions of civilization. Yet that peace is about to end. A distant empire has been conquering neighbours with highly trained soldiers and sophisticated combat techniques. And the city states are its desirable new prize. Only the ageing Stenwold Maker – spymaster, artificer and statesman – foresees the threat, as the empires’ armies march ever closer. So it falls upon his shoulders to open the eyes of the cities’ leaders.

Story
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

Amazing world building, a plethora of great characters and, and a heady mix of sci-fi, dying earth tropes, and horror. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for dying earth fiction or anyone ne looking for a good sci Fi/fantasy novel in general.

fantastic!

Like a breath of fresh air. Hogan was concerned with telling a compelling and interesting story before anything else, which is an increasingly rare trait among fiction authors these days. For instance one of the characters sexual orientation was not the point of the story, the story wasn't written to serve that trait. Fantastic book.

Story
Odessa Hardwicke's life is derailed when she's forced to turn her gun on her partner, Walt Leppo, a decorated FBI agent who turns suddenly, inexplicably violent while apprehending a rampaging murderer. The shooting, justified by self-defense, shakes the young FBI agent to her core. Devastated, Odessa is placed on desk leave pending a full investigation. But what most troubles Odessa isn't the tragedy itself - it's the shadowy presence she thought she saw fleeing the deceased agent's body after his death.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 04-19-23
It's hard to believe that Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan couldn't do better than this. Cliches, potholes, and frankly boring and derivative storylines. if you're going to give me demons make it demonic. Repetitive fixation on slavery and here we go again shoehorning a boring female protagonist into the story. The best part about the book was the hollow one and the chapters from its point of view. Even then the rules of the world building are not clear and the coincidences become ridiculous.

This book only becomes more prescient with time. Its completely different than the 1987 film adaptation. Not only is this thrilling and suspenseful but it has a lot to say.
