Story fine, narrative got excruciating, but not narrator's fault.
Reviewed: 05-16-24
In the audio version of this book, the online conversations were excruciating due to the reading of the online address of each participant at each utterance. If reading a book, the reader's eye would just gloss over those parts. It was like pulling teeth to have to listen to it. For future listeners, have your finger on the fast forward!

Story
We human beings share 98 percent of our genes with chimpanzees. Yet humans are the dominant species on the planet - having founded civilizations and religions, developed intricate and diverse forms of communication, learned science, built cities, and created breathtaking works of art - while chimps remain animals concerned primarily with the basic necessities of survival. What is it about that two percent difference in DNA that has created such a divergence between evolutionary cousins?

Im a biologist, birdwatcher and environmentalist very open to his message, but getting through this book was pure academic discipline. An abridged version would have been more than adequate; that or a strong-spined editor.

A good story, but with lots of characters, 28 (by my count) who appear more than once. Hard for me to keep them all in mind without a playbook.

Story
The American West in the early 1960s appears to be a pastoral paradise: golden wheat fields, mist-filled canyons, frolicking animals. Aspiring novelist Aaron Holland Broussard has observed it from the open door of a boxcar, riding the rails for both inspiration and odd jobs. Jumping off in Denver, he finds work on a farm and meets Joanne McDuffy, an articulate and fierce college student and gifted painter. Their soul connection is immediate, but their romance is complicated by Joanne’s involvement with a shady professor who is mixed up with a drug-addled cult.

A supernatural disappointment.

I love James Lee Burke's writing. His descriptions, especially those that put me in the beautiful swamps and marshes of Louisiana are wonderful. I hope this recent departure into the supernatural is a side road and not a new direction.

Story
In a startling departure, James Lee Burke has written an epic story of love, hate and survival set against the tumultuous background of the Civil War and Reconstruction. At the center of the tale are James lee Burke's own ancestors, Robert Perry, who comes from the slave-owning family of wealth and privilege, and Willy Burke, born of Irish immigrants, a poor boy who is as irreverent as he is brave and decent. Despite personal and political conflicts, both men join the Confederate Army, determined not to back down.

Burke Puts You There
Reviewed: 05-28-21
This is not a book for the squeeamish. Descriptions of war (Civil) and immediate aftermath were graphic. The lives of enslaved people was probably as fairly represented as I can imagine. So was the callous diaregard for fellow human beings that, unfortunately, seems to be proudly reasserting itself among the same tyoes of people today. How bad can it get? Burke shows us.
