Story fine, narrative got excruciating, but not narrator's fault.

In the audio version of this book, the online conversations were excruciating due to the reading of the online address of each participant at each utterance. If reading a book, the reader's eye would just gloss over those parts. It was like pulling teeth to have to listen to it. For future listeners, have your finger on the fast forward!

Im a biologist, birdwatcher and environmentalist very open to his message, but getting through this book was pure academic discipline. An abridged version would have been more than adequate; that or a strong-spined editor.

A good story, but with lots of characters, 28 (by my count) who appear more than once. Hard for me to keep them all in mind without a playbook.

Far and away too much emphasis on the protagonist's pecker. Nice descriptions of the areas and nature.

I love James Lee Burke's writing. His descriptions, especially those that put me in the beautiful swamps and marshes of Louisiana are wonderful. I hope this recent departure into the supernatural is a side road and not a new direction.

Would not have bought this book had the reviews been candid about its content. Just wasnt my cup of tea.

So many turns it gave me whiplash! A good read, but not with distractions. For some reason they require more words. So that last sentenance and this one constitute more words.

A purging of emotion and experience over the vietnam war. Interesting, more violent than I would have preferred, but maybe it helps those who went thru it.

This is not a book for the squeeamish. Descriptions of war (Civil) and immediate aftermath were graphic. The lives of enslaved people was probably as fairly represented as I can imagine. So was the callous diaregard for fellow human beings that, unfortunately, seems to be proudly reasserting itself among the same tyoes of people today. How bad can it get? Burke shows us.

All stories were burdened with too much detail and protagonists who exposed themselves to improbable dangers. First narrator mispronounced over a dozen words. If you use her again, have someone listen and correct first.
