Finally some movement on the plot. i always love stories involving Edward aka Ted. going to Ireland was great, and Damien and Nathaniel are maturing into strong characters. Way to go!

This story granted deals with changing the timeline but at times it feels like the author lost track of details or forgot to fill us in. I'm ready for this series to be over already.

The narrator was fabulous and appropriately male. I love Davina Porter but this was Jamie's and Ian's story. This was rather short even for a novella from Diana Gabaldon. Jamie, as usual is hurt and gets more beat up throughout the story. A little more fleshing out of the characters would have been nice. even Jamie and Ian are not well described. The basic plot and progression are there, but no real meat in the story. This seemed more about society's prejudice against Jews than two young Highlanders desperate to survive and navigate their world.

The story kept me engaged and the narrator's interpretation was excellent. Distinctive voices for all of the characters with a realistic sounding Ryan. I listened to Patriot Games prior to The Hunt For Red October and enjoyed Scott Brick's reading of that book, I it enjoyed this more as Brick's reading made the Ryan character sound like his reading of John Corey in DeMille's books. Ryan is not an ex-New York cop and needs a different treatment. I look forward to my next "read" in this series.

The Best

Outlander is one of my all time favorites and Davina Porter is an excellent reader. The unabridged version outstrips the abridged reads by Geraldine James. I already owned an audio cassette version of this book as well as two hard compies. I wanted to be able to take the story with me and listen to it on my MP3 player and was very pleased to see it finally listed on the Audible service. The unabridged versions of this series are highly recommended over the abriged as there are too many details to leave out. You'll love Clair and Jamie almost as if they were real people. They are both practicle, and romantic. They have a love that is accepting and enduring, which spans over 30 years during the course of the series. There are many colorful characters in this story and they are all well rounded. A story that makes it hard to put down and come back to the present. Jamie is a macho man who respects the talented Clair, can ride like no one else, fight with a sword, and who knows when to hold a woman and just let her cry. Clair is always pragmatic, and has a wry sense of humor. Mostly told in the first person, the book is outstanding.

stolen from the gypsies

Overall
2 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 02-15-06

yuck. This book isn't particularly funny, and it's hard to understand where it's going. It features a very self-indulgent character who evidently thinks that he is writing a witty ditty about the adult exploits of a baby stolen from the Gypsies. The writing is crud and this book is a dud. Don't waste your money.
