Well paced story, excellent narration and very enjoyable. Seems a bit of a stretch to call it historical fiction but still a good story.

Story
Filled with breathtaking scenes, the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is a meditation on the limits of language and what lies beyond, a brilliantly inventive retelling of an ancient story, and an epic tale of devotion, betrayal, and courage in the American heartland.

Not worth it

Save yourself 20 hours and just listen to the last two! I had two friends tell me it was one of their favorite books and now I’m not sure about this friendship! It went on and on, nicely written, but without really much other story. Can’t recommend.

Story
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

I read this book when it first came out and decided to listen as I was going to Africa and remembered how deeply moved I was by it. I actually forgot how much. It is one of the most exceptionally written beautifully expressed books in print. The narration was perfect and I felt the book was even better having listen to it. It is a must read and listen!

Story
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.
