Story
A killer is on the loose in the Arizona Territory. One by one, Tonto Basin ranchers are being murdered for their livestock - and the Cattle Raisers' Association has hired two range detectives to catch the culprit. From the looks of them, Stovepipe Stewart and Wilbur Coleman are just another pair of high-plains drifters. But with their razor-sharp detective skills and rare talent for trouble, they're the last remaining hope for one young cowboy who's been arrested for the murders. Stovepipe and Wilbur believe the boy is innocent.

Great as usual by the Johnstons

Another homerun by my favorite author. If you are not familiar with his work you should give this one a try. The performance is great and the story itself is just believable enough to be entertaining. Many books and writers in this genre are a little outlandish but Johnstone Always manages to hold the line on excessive exaggeration in his storytelling

Story
Framed for murder, Dewey "Mac" McKenzie is running for his life. Though Mac's never even made a pot of coffee, he talks his way onto a cattle drive heading west as a chuckwagon cook. Turns out he has a natural talent for turning salt pork and dried beans into culinary gold. He's as good with a pot and pan as he is with a gun, which comes in handy on a dangerous trail drive beset with rustlers, hostile Indians, ornery weather, and deadly stampedes. Mac can hold his own with any cowboy twice his age. At least until the real showdown begins . . .

As usual this writer and narrator never fails to disappoint. I think I have downloaded about 25 or 30 of his books and I love everyone of them. If you like westerns, this author compares well with Elmer Kelton who I also love.

Too Repetitive in Parts

The story will probably remind you of "Bone Tomahawk" Initially. I thought the escape and capture sequences were too repetitive as the book wound down to a good finish. Overall a good read but the Johnstone's have done better in the past.

Great story but it seemed to drag a little. Perley isn't exactly the bang, bang, shoot em up and fist brawl kinda guy that I expected. It is a very well written story but I prefer more action.
