Loved the story of the amazing Nancy Wake Fiocca

Though I don’t live the jumping around in time, & sometimes had to clarify where we were in any given section, we loved the story of this powerfully captivating woman. I’m thinking about looking for her autobiography now. The reader was great. I’ll be thinking about this one for a while.

Hard to listen to

We really wanted to like this book. I’m a historian & retired teacher & am very interested in Native American history. My husband & I listened to this together - what we could get through. We found the descriptions too long and the characters a bit tough to keep up with. The performance was just hard to listen to & we didn’t last long.

Story
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

I listened to most of this book alone, & then went on a long car trip with my husband, so we started again together. At times I felt utterly frustrated and enraged. You’ll learning more about the life-altering shortcomings, and the devastation that can result, of our political and legal system. Stevenson’s narration is strong and I preferred the book to the movie.

Story
In collaboration with the ACLU, authors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman have curated an anthology of essays about landmark cases in the organization’s 100-year history. Fight of the Century takes you inside the trials and the stories that have shaped modern life. Some of the most prominent cases that the ACLU has been involved in - Brown v. Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, Miranda v. Arizona - need little introduction. Others you may never even have heard of, yet their outcomes quietly defined the world we live in now.

Story
A free woman of color in the 1830s, Margaret Morgan lived a life full of promise. One frigid night in Pennsylvania, that changed forever. They tore her family apart. They put her in chains. But they never expected her to fight back. In 1837, Margaret Morgan was kidnapped from her home in Pennsylvania and sold into slavery. The state of Pennsylvania charged her kidnapper with the crime, but the conviction was later overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. Yet, the heart of this story is not a Supreme Court ruling.

I know that this is historical fiction, and it’s an era that I studied in grad school. I wanted very much to like this story, and to hear what McCann could bring to life of Margaret Morgan and her story. Unfortunately, the narration distracted me; Bankston’s delivery was too slow and measured between characters and too cloying. The story felt unfinished. Overall it just fell short for me.

The mix of modern and past stories is a device in many books, but this one was well done. Though I felt somewhat less interested in the modern story, a few of the details hit home and the way they came together was different than what I thought might happen. I was very engaged in Alina’s story and would have listened to more of it!

Story
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.
