Story
Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles. Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen.

A good story but the ending seemed rushed. After all the effort that went into identifying the killer, the final scene had the feel the author just wanted to
finish.

Story
In 2011, three successful and highly educated women fell head over heels for the brilliant and charming Ethan Schuman. Unbeknownst to the others, each exchanged countless messages with Ethan, staying up late into the evenings to deepen their connections with this fascinating man. His detailed excuses about broken webcams and complicated international calling plans seemed believable, as did last minute trip cancellations. After all, why would he lie? Ethan wasn't after money—he never convinced his marks to shell out thousands of dollars for some imagined crisis.

Interesting if puzzling...
Reviewed: 08-05-24
An interesting story well told with a proper amount of detail. But as I read about these women, I was so puzzled by their behaviors that I would periodically have to remind myself that this really happened and wasn't just a work of fiction. This was an account of educated, intelligent women who evidently had enjoyed romantic relationships, had satisfying careers, in other words had seemingly normal lifestyles. Yet they allowed a stranger they could never meet in person and with whom they never had a phone conversation to manipulate and humiliate them. I just couldn't understand their willingness, nor could I figure out how the 'puppetmaster' found the time to carry on so many complicated schemes at one time. Definitely could not identify with any of the characters.

The Cormoran Strike novels are the only ones that I have listened to more than once. Even knowing the plot well, it's like hearing a fine piece of music over again. Robert Glenister is hands down one of the best narrators in the game. His mastery at different voices is impressive. He and J.K. Rowling are a combined treasure.

So begins a press release from a mysterious group known only as “The Five,” shortly after a vicious predator is murdered in San Francisco. The Five is made up of vigilante killers who are very bored…and very rich. They target the worst of society—rapists, murderers, and thieves—and then use their unlimited resources to offset the damage done by those who they’ve killed, donating untraceable Bitcoin to charities and victims via the dark net. The Five soon become popular figures in the media …though their motives may not be entirely pure.

The sum is less than the parts.

I've been a Prey fan since the very first in the series. And I was equally enthusiastic when Virgil became a series of his own. But simply sticking them together was a bad idea. The character of each one was distinct and enjoyable in its own way. Betweenl Jenkins and Shrake in one series, Johnson Johnson in the other -- each story held its own interesting players. Righteous Prey was missing the individuality each series had. What made John Sandford think this Sundance and Butch Cassidy approach was going to be better? I won't be pre-ordering next year.

Story
Ike Randolph has been out of jail for fifteen years, with not so much as a speeding ticket in all that time. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah’s white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. Derek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though, and he wants to know who killed his boy.

Thoroughly Enjoyable

The story is compelling on its own but the narration makes it exceptional. There is violence and offensive language but it occurs in a context that is believable, as opposed to simply being 'shoe-horned' in for the sake of atmosphere. I found myself eager to get back to the story and Adam Lazarre-White's voice in the telling of it.

I've enjoyed many of Connelly's books but this one didn't do it. Far too much computer/server description for my taste. Perhaps it wouldn't annoy a tech enthusiast. McAvoy is just not an interesting character like Bosch. None of the characters were especially interesting. Even the evil villain was a stick figure. Not a terrible book. Just meh.

A disappointing read. Any time you can skip
2 or 3 chapters and still keep up with the story, you have a book that needs serious editing — and better plotting. Sorry I wasted the time I did spend on it.
