Captivating story

I enjoyed the story, but knocked off a star for all the fat shaming. I feel like the story could’ve been told without so much of that. Other than that, it was intriguing.

Story
In this "celebration of midlife and all its marvelous messiness,” Lisa Darling, a high-flying TV executive and twice-divorced mother of two, is navigating life with an opinionated teenager and a pet-obsessed grade-schooler, organizing PTA events, and supporting her best friend through breast cancer treatment, all while in the throes of perimenopause. It’s no wonder her to-do list is on overdrive and she never has time for Pilates or that DIY interior design project she keeps setting aside.

I enjoyed this unique take on a rom com. A main character who is pre menopausal? A message of body positivity? The struggle of a mom overwhelmed by trying to balance work, self care and parenting, where the answer wasn’t just to quit her job? Yes please to all of this! Also, the narrator was spot on! I could listen to her read tax codes and be entertained.

Jane and Dan have been married for nineteen years, but Jane isn’t sure they’re going to make it to twenty. The mother of two feels unneeded by her teenagers, and her writing career has screeched to an unsuccessful halt. Her one published novel sold under five hundred copies. Worse? She’s pretty sure Dan is cheating on her. When the couple goes to the renowned upscale restaurant La Fin du Monde to celebrate their anniversary, Jane thinks it’s as good a place as any to tell Dan she wants a divorce.

Story
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

This kept my interest throughout the book. . What a difference the messages that a couple people that believe in you and love you can make. I am not a huge political person, but thought I should try to learn something about this potential vice president candidate. I’m glad I did. Sounds like he is somebody who worked hard to get where he’s at in life, served our country in the military and has loyalty. I am glad I didn’t just pay attention to snippets and headlines and that I listened to his story.

I was slow to jump on the bandwagon for this book that has been on the best seller list for how long now? I believed it was overhyped. After listening to it, I no longer believe that. All the praise is well earned. I was captivated by this story that hooked me right from the start. That this was such a personal story for the talented Colleen Hoover to share only adds to it. This really helped me to better understand why it can be so hard for a person to leave this abusive situation…the thoughts and feelings that they wrestle with are not so black and white. Olivia Song did a phenomenal job of narrating all the characters.
