Story
Austin Channing Brown’s first encounter with a racialized America came at age seven, when she discovered her parents named her Austin to deceive future employers into thinking she was a white man. Growing up in majority-white schools and churches, Austin writes, “I had to learn what it means to love blackness,” a journey that led to a lifetime spent navigating America’s racial divide as a writer, speaker, and expert helping organizations practice genuine inclusion.

Challenging and Convicting
Reviewed: 09-24-20
As someone who works at a Christian organization, I felt very challenged and called out by this book. The author doesn’t pull punches so if you want to keep your white fragility intact, this is not for you. But if you are willing to listen to hard truths and work on change, listen good and hard. Austin tells her story and her reality in a clear, concise, and moving way. She lays bare the wounds she has endured and points an accusing finger at those who perpetuate her wounds. Worth every minute of it. I plan on seeking change within my organization as a result of this and checking myself when I feel the need to confess a past wrongdoing to a random Black person. Racism and reconciliation are messy things and if you aren’t willing to put in hard work and get dirty, then you’re just adding to the mess.

Story
History’s most unlikely friendship - this is the astonishing story of Queen Victoria and her dearest companion, the young Indian Munshi Abdul Karim. In the twilight years of her reign, after the devastating deaths of her two great loves - Prince Albert and John Brown - Queen Victoria meets tall and handsome Abdul Karim, a humble servant from Agra waiting tables at her Golden Jubilee. The two form an unlikely bond and within a year Abdul becomes a powerful figure at court, the Queen’s teacher, her counsel on Urdu and Indian affairs, and a friend close to her heart.

I bought the book after seeing the movie’s preview because we all know the books are always better. But I can’t bring myself to finish this one. It’s dry. There is no flow to the story or reading of it and with the diary inserts it becomes repetitive. Abdul sounds like an obnoxious prat over time. I really wanted to enjoy this story but alas...

Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Rosamund 👌🏼

Rosamund Pike could not have done this classic work any more justice. Using voices easily maintained for each character but not so different as to be ridiculous, she gives life to Pride and Prejudice in a way fitting to it’s time period.
