Skulking near the bottom of West High’s social pyramid, Sideways Pike lurks under the bleachers doing magic tricks for Coke bottles. As a witch, lesbian, and lifelong outsider, she’s had a hard time making friends. But when the three most popular girls pay her $40 to cast a spell at their Halloween party, Sideways gets swept into a new clique. Everything I hoped it would be
Revisado: 09-08-21
I found this book because I read a book review of the last unicorn on torr, and even in that format I knew I wanted to read more of this author. I loved the style of Hannah right away. I'm so glad Hannah brought this book into existence, it's just what I needed. The prose is delightful and poetic, drawing scenes with slashes and then the fine tips of fingernails, the story is unapologetically free and perfect. I hope one day I can speak with Hannah in the real world and thank them personally.

Historia
There are things in this world that men and women aren't meant to understand. We aren't supposed to know these things exist, much less how to fight them. The things that go bump in the night, the monsters in the closet, the shadow out of the corner of your eye - that's where I live.

Sexist Main Character
Revisado: 07-28-21
The main character says he "hopes the old girl was just on the rag" within five minutes. He pretty much turns every female character he meets into a sex object before we even know their names. Ugh, just gross. I hate that people are comparing this to the Dresden Files, Its like if Harry Dresden was literally the worst grossest person.

if you like Neil Gaiman's work this audiobook is a must. Crafted perfectly for the medium, well narrated, immersive, and fantastical. The best audiobook I've ever heard.

Historia
In the medieval kingdom of Goredd, women are expected to be ladies, men are their protectors, and dragons can be whomever they choose. Tess is none of these things. Tess is...different. She speaks out of turn, has wild ideas, and can't seem to keep out of trouble. Then Tess goes too far. Tess's family decide the only path for her is a nunnery. But on the day she is to join the nuns, Tess chooses a different path for herself. She cuts her hair, pulls on her boots, and sets out on a journey. She's not running away, she's running towards something.

Fantasy from a uniquely female perspective
Revisado: 05-19-20
I loved this book. It is well written, unique, immersive, and relatable. At first, it was almost too relatable in it's honest depictions of emotional and other abuse, but please keep reading! Tess of the Road harnesses the vehicle of fiction to examine trauma, loss, grief, and self hatred in a way I have not seen some before.

Truly a work of art
Revisado: 08-14-17
The Handmaid's Tale is one of those rare novels that can transport you through time while you are reading it. I started listening at 8am and before I knew if it was already 3pm, so absorbed was I in the story. Atwood prose is beautiful and the way she sets her scenes and give insights to her characters creates a juxtaposition of real grace and beauty that is found in dark and tragic moments. I am overjoyed to have had the privilege of reading it.

Amazing! I could not stop listening to this story.
Revisado: 04-30-17
The full cast voice production of this book makes it easy to lose yourself in another world where gods and folk heros walk amount us. This book has it all, mystery, romance, action, and deeply complex characters who are many things at the same time they are one.
