Cynicism
Reviewed: 02-28-22
I found this to be the most amusing and entertaining of the three books.
The main protagonist is without any redeeming characteristic or personality. They are utterly without empathy or any concern for those whose lives are ruined or uprooted. They are by far the most interesting and intriguing character.

There is a personal price to pay for having aligned with the wrong side in a reckless war. For Aden Jansen it's the need to adopt a new identity while keeping his past hidden. Now he's integrated himself aboard the Zephyr, a merchant ship smuggling critical goods through dangerous space. But danger is imminent on planet Gretia, as well. Under occupation, torn between postwar reformers and loyalists, it's a polestar for civil unrest.

Should be the end of Book 1

I’m enjoying this series, my only complaint is this should be the end of book 1. And I really hope that book 3 is a complete book.

When Commander Charlie Cass, the bastard son of the Duke de Maris, returns from five years in a squalid Syndonese POW camp, he finds that little has changed in the Realm. As always, the King and the nine Dukes are conspiring against each other, but now some of them are plotting with Charlie's old enemy. And as interstellar war looms, they certainly don't need Charlie Cass messing up their delicate plans. Unfortunately for them, that's what he's best at.

Great story interrupted by teenage romance!
Reviewed: 03-06-20
The Thirteenth Man is a great story with political and military intrigue.
The women in this particular book, though, are poorly written and the relationship between the MC & the princess comes across like two teenagers awkwardly fumbling about. Making some parts hard to listen to!

Story
The galaxy was once terrorized by the Sturm, a group of “species purists” intent on destroying any human with genetic or cybernetic enhancements. Fashioning themselves as the one true “Human Republic,” the Sturm cut a bloody swath across the stars, killing billions before finally being defeated and driven into the far reaches of Dark Space. Centuries of peace bred complacency. Everyone believed the Sturm had died out in the Dark. They were wrong.

Too many characters.
Reviewed: 08-27-19
This was a good story about the outbreak of a war, but I believe their were too many characters.
All the characters eventually converge on this first book and the resolution was well done. With the number of characters I’m concerned though that future books will become a bit unruly. Only time will tell though.

Environmentalism.
Reviewed: 08-08-19
While I enjoyed the book the plot is a very thinly veiled metaphor concerning the need for environmental stewardship, this was at times distracting.
If you’re looking for sophisticated fantasy or dragon fiction then this is not the book for you. If you’re in a mood for a simple story and you do not care that the story canbe a bit preachy at times then this a good book for you.

Complete Story!
Reviewed: 07-29-19
What I love most about this series so far is that each book is a self-contained story. If there is no book three then I'll be disappointed, but the heart and soul of this book is Hadrian Marlow's disillusionment.
This second instalment is refreshing and is distinct from the first, I highly recommend the series and am quite impressed with the second instalment.

Story
Lynx and the rest of the Cards are heading south. There's money in their pockets, beer in their hands and a simple job ahead - sun, sea and not getting shot at much. Throw in the prospect of a bar fight and it's almost a holiday. But the volatile Mage Islands are a powder-keg, one just waiting for a spark. A bloody-handed exile perhaps, or the agent of a foreign power preparing for war. Maybe even a bunch of trigger-happy drunks who've upset the balance of magic across the Riven Kingdom. Or all three together, that'd definitely work....

Reviewed: 07-29-19
Piers Hampton does a much better job at narrating this third instalment. Although for me this book has always been about the dialogue between characters.
While the plot is well thought out and I'm interested to see where the story eventually leads, the humorous dialogue between characters is what keeps bringing me back to this series.
I look forward to the next book.
