Okay saying this is not Sanderson's best series is akin to saying Oranges aren't as apple-y as apples. I mean if you really want an apple and someone hands you an orange, at first you might be all, "this is not satisfying my apple craving". But then you start eating the orange and it's very sweet. Soon you are thinking "Wow, for an orange, this is darn satisfying." I mean you could always go back and read The Way of Kings if you want an apple. Actually, THAT series is more like an apple pie; warm, sweet and satisfying. This is more like an orange park e, if anyone wants very made one. I wonder why they don't make orange pies? Ah well., anyway, enjoy your orange!

Story
In his first-ever Doctor Who novel, Tom Baker’s incredible imagination is given free rein. A story so epic it was originally intended for the big screen, Scratchman is a gripping, white-knuckle thriller almost 40 years in the making. The Doctor, Harry and Sarah Jane Smith arrive at a remote Scottish island when their holiday is cut short by the appearance of strange creatures - hideous scarecrows who are preying on the local population. The islanders are living in fear, and the Doctor vows to save them all.

read and authored by Tom Baker, wow. Tom really shows why he is often considered the definitive doctor by the depth of his understanding of the character. This was one of the most well-written adventures I've encountered. His writing allows you to visualize so well the scenes being played out. For anyone like me who's had the mystery and fun of the doctor torn away by the new timeless child series ( I refuse to call Chibnall's retcon, child gating mysoginistic drivel Dr Who) This will bring you back to when Doctor Who was great

Sanderson masterfully weaves the threads of numerous plot lines , eliminating some and elevating others to reveal the tapestry of the final conflict to come. all the pieces are positioned as Sanderson successfully preserves Jordan's vision for his characters. Simply outstanding writing!

sensational classic scifi for teens and adults

Sanderson takes a break from the epic fantasy genre to bring some straightforward scifi ALA Andre Norton or Heinlein. My daughter who is 13 LOVES this book..adventure, humor a spunky female antagonist, and a plot that keeps you constantly guessing. This book brought back memories for me of War Against the Full and David Starr Space Ranger. I can't wait for a sequel. I will never eat mushrooms again without thinking of Embot! Sanderson is a master of character development.

What did you like best about this story?
Branden Sanderson writes characters in a way that makes you care. How may times have you turned off a novel when you even THOUGHT a favorite character might die? This was the first time I ever did something like that. Sanderson's world is incredibly rich, his prose adapts to his characters and helps show their evolution as individuals. His world physics are always unique and fresh...
Have you listened to any of Michael Kramer and Kate Reading ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
They do a wonderful job bringing this book to life. Usually I listen to books out of necessity but prefer to read them. In this case, Michael and Kate are an integral part of bringing the story to life.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
It was an enemy of total destruction that only the Gods could have defeated. But with humanity abandoned by the Gods, what mortals would dare stand against the coming storm?
Any additional comments?
Greatest epic in scope and story since Dune...Sanderson doesn't write novels; he births new realities

Story
In celebration of the week-long, once-in-a-decade rite of Apert, the fras and suurs prepare to venture outside the concent's gates - opening them wide at the same time to welcome the curious "extras" in. During his first Apert as a fra, Erasmus eagerly anticipates reconnecting with the landmarks and family he hasn't seen since he was "collected". But before the week is out, both the existence he abandoned and the one he embraced will stand poised on the perilous brink of cataclysmic change.

What did you like best about Anathem? What did you like least?
The frequent philosophical discussions of poly cosmic and quantum relationships could be intriguing. The political landscape of the world and its evolution was also fascinating; however the expected conflicts between people of differing beliefs was mitigated. In other words, you would have expected more overt prejudice and hostility.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Imagine if your favorite sci-fi series, the one that really made you think about humanity and its place in the grand scheme of things ended with some adolescent musings on coitus and a "and so, without boring details of how victory was accomplished, they all lived happily ever after". That's how disappointed I was,
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He has a soothing voice. He really made me like the main character. His voice actually filled out the missing elements of personality and emotion in the story. When he infrequently used the wrong inflection or pitch for the character it was noticeable. I would immediately think, "Hey! that's not R--- talking!"
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
It could be a decent 2001 or Gravity type movie but that would center on non-essential story elements. And the degree of philosophical debate and pythagorean mathematical philosophy would have to be really dumbed down. No, this could not be a movie without sacrificing essential story elements.
Any additional comments?
If you love the purity of mathematical philosophy and how it might relate both to Poly-Cosmic theory and quantum level cognition, but don't like non-fiction, this book is for you. But compelling story its definitely not....
