Historia
Deep beneath our feet, vast and sprawling, lies one of the most sophisticated empires the world has ever known. At first glance, it might not look like much - it is made up of fibre optic cables and obscure payment systems. But according to prominent political scientists Henry Farrell and Abraham Newman, this network is the key source of American power on the global stage, more significant than its military might. Underground Empire weaves together tales of economic conflict, shadowy surveillance technologies and covert infrastructure projects to present an explosive new vision of geopolitics.

very different view of the world
Revisado: 07-24-24
very precise observation of how economies have changed drastically over the past 15 years into weapons - and how multinationals (and illicit cartels) have unwittingly become ammunition - combined with a monetary system that relies on US currency, it lays out why the world is how it is. There is some faint light at the end of the tunnel in the conclusion, but I would suggest that the probability any of that ever materialised would be zero. Pandora's box is opened and we are moving to fragmented economic zones with everyone Los Ng in the end.

Historia
In fifteen short chapters, Chris Hedges astonishes us with his clear and cogent argument against war, not on philosophical grounds or through moral arguments, but in an irrefutable stream of personal encounters with the victims of war, from veterans and parents to gravely wounded American serviceman who served in the Iraq War, to survivors of the Holocaust, to soldiers in the Falklands War, among others. Hedges reported from Sarajevo, and was in the Balkans to witness the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Truthful account of our society
Revisado: 06-27-24
The final chapter disappointed me, don't quote Freud. Psychoanalysis has unleashed horrors on this world akin to the virus of war. Other than this, the book is a painful truthful observation of society. it's uncomfortable and once you see it, you can't unsee it. :(

The existence of free will - our ability to choose between one course of action and another, to determine our own destiny - is a foundation stone of Western society, dictating our notions of fairness and justice, punishment and reward, our very identity as individuals and humans. But as world-renowned scientist Robert Sapolsky shows, there is not a shred of evidence to suggest that free will exists, even while everything in our biology leads us to believe that it does.

Historia
In the 21st century, humanity is reaching new heights of scientific understanding - and, at the same time, appears to be losing its mind. How can a species that developed vaccines for COVID-19 in less than a year produce so much fake news, quack cures and conspiracy theorising? Pinker rejects the cynical cliché that humans are an irrational species. Instead, he explains that we think in ways that are sensible in the low-tech contexts in which we spend most of our lives, but fail to take advantage of the powerful tools of reasoning we have built up over the millennia.

An excellent book at a time it is needed
Revisado: 04-16-22
This book should be required reading in every first year undergrad course. For every degree. Actually, it should be bedtime reading for your primary school children if they can penetrate the language. They may even acquire a fondness for Yiddish humour.
This book penetrates some of the most challenging and seemingly unrelated subjects of our time and provides a kind of 'cognitive glue' to make sense of them as symptoms of something much more profound. Spoiler alert: it's rationality and our cognitive pitfalls - individually and at scale.
The book itself is a joy to listen to, the narrator channels Pinker's brilliant way of taking a complex subject and delivering it in a totally accessible way. I think you really need to get the PDF illustrations to make the most of the book, especially in probability discussions, however even without this - challenging concepts are broken up with analogies and humorous yet poignant asides.
overall, a highly recommended read.

spectacular work of research
Revisado: 02-21-22
I cannot even fathom how hard it must have been to write this epic work. the depth of research and detail is staggering. my only disappointment was the ending insofar as there isn't one - they remain criminals at large with the means to exploit the system to their will so they can never be brought to justice. disheartening, yet a story that must be told all the same. thank you.

In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

This book should be compulsory reading for high school students - and I would recommend this book for everyone.
An example of how to act aligned with your principles. An eye opening look into the surveillance state and the surveillance economy. A guide to encryption and personal security in a digital world. A thrilling story. A moving memoir. All in one book.
Well written, well read (audiobook). My respect for Mr Snowden grew deeper with this book and I enjoyed it immensely.

The previous edition of this now-classic book revealed the existence and subversive manipulations of "economic hit men". John Perkins wrote that economic hit men (EHM) "are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder".

compelling from page 1 this book lifts the curtain to show how all those dramatic narratives in the news over the past 50 years are connected.
the most important thing about this book is the glimmer of hope it shines through the seemingly impenetrable wall of global imperialism, greed and corruption facing the world today.

You should probably read this book too
Revisado: 01-06-19
This book takes the loose ends of everything you know, the ideas about life you thought in the edge of your consciousness, and brings them into focus.
As I read, I kept being reminded of the first time I put on glasses. I didn't think I had a vision problem, but I did have headaches when I was in lectures, my girlfriend at the time (now wife) insisted I investigate my eyesight, so I begrudgingly got a pair of glasses. Then I put them on and the world was different. It was clear and in focus. My heart skipped a beat.
If you have read maps of meaning then you can hear echoes of it here, but there is 20 years of experience from maps of meaning to this book. There is a lot to digest here. Maps of Meaning may have been a dense intellectual book, 12 Rules is equivalent on an emotional level. There is a lot to take in. Maybe it's worth reading a few times.
This book is odd because it is not 'self help' - it's not a psychology text, it does not fit into categories well... Jordan Peterson came out of nowhere (in the public eye at least) and in a few years wrote a book that knocked it out of the park. nailed it. Maybe that 20 year journey is what it took? Whatever the motivation, whatever the circumstances, I can only thank him for doing such a work.
I read. My heart skipped a beat. I can see.
