Excellent book and narration

Anne Hathaway did a remarkable job of narration on this book and that made it even more enjoyable. I’ve loved the film for years (a lot of years) but had somehow never read the books. I will continue on reading this series. Hoping the narration on the rest of them are half as good as this actor was.

Very moving

This is the first book that has made me cry in a long time. As a white woman who does everything that I can to learn about black culture so that any preconceived notions or prejudices can be brought forward in my brain. I’ve once again realized that I still have more to learn. Felicia’s story is so difficult to insert how I would have handled what she was forced to endure. The pain she went through in her life had me crying for that poor girl and then the woman she became. I felt pride for her accomplishments and was impressed with her love of family. I have become a fan of this author. Thank you so much for helping me understand.

Sally is amazing

I really loved this book. Sally Field has been a favorite of mine for years. What I love about her is her frankness. She just told the story. I don’t need flowery words I just want the truth. That is exactly what she gives a reader in this book.

Tells about the true heart of my childhood home

I loved this book. Brian Doyle’s Chicago neighborhood was where I lived for four years during Nursing School at Illinois Masonic and right after. He skips most of the obvious Chicago sites and talks directly about the neighborhood. Thank you for sharing your memories!

Hearing the story of a strong and smart young woman who changed the history of South Carolina. It was not by chance tat it happened but by determination and grit. Well told, well read and inspirational! I found myself cheering her on! Thank you for a lovely book.

The characters were normal people that the author made likable and relatable. The story of their struggles through the war and concentration camps was compelling. I hope to read more of his works.
