Story
In “the most comprehensive Garfield biography in almost fifty years” (The Wall Street Journal), C.W. Goodyear charts the life and times of one of the most remarkable Americans ever to win the Presidency. Progressive firebrand and conservative compromiser; Union war hero and founder of the first Department of Education; Supreme Court attorney and abolitionist preacher; mathematician and canalman; crooked election-fixed and clean-government champion; Congressional chieftain and gentleman-farmer; the last president to be born in a log cabin; the second to be assassinated.

A great story, but the reading could be...
Reviewed: 10-21-23
I wanted to listen to this for quite some time and finally did recently. The story was deep enough to bring Garfield's personality to light but the reading... There seemed to me to be a lot of splicing throughout and it sounds like a different narrator during those times. I realize this occurs from time to time but it happened quite often in this narration and therefore detracted from the book. It was as if during editing the book reading they noticed things were missing so someone else spliced in those missing parts. Overall the story is good.

Story
Omar Nelson Bradley was the youngest and last of nine men to earn five-star rank and the only army officer so honored after World War II. This new biography by Steven L. Ossad gives an account of Bradley’s formative years, his decorated career, and his postwar life. Bradley’s decisions shaped the five Northwest European Campaigns from the D-Day landings to VE Day. As the man who successfully led more Americans in battle than any other in our history, his long-term importance would seem assured.

The quiet five star, comes to life!
Reviewed: 05-14-20
A great life story regarding General Bradley. I will say his early life and later life are covered but in only 10% of the book. Most of the book deals with his WWII service. But it was great nonetheless. At times I felt like the reading was for a news broadcast rather than a life story. But overall I was happy with it. Thankx

Story
John Wayne projected dignity, integrity, and strength in all his films, even when his characters were flawed, and whatever character he played was always prepared to confront injustice in his own way. More than thirty years after his death, he remains the standard by which male stars are judged and an actor whose morally unambiguous films continue to attract sizeable audiences.

John Wayne unpeeled!
Reviewed: 02-05-20
I very much enjoyed this bio by Scott Eyman. I grew up watching John Wayne and this caused me to view parts of my own life as the Duke was living the last years of his. I'm actually planning on watching everything he acted in over the years. I also liked John McLain's narration. He has a John Wayne like voice and at times he sounded like the man himself speaking. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested not only in John Wayne or John Ford but individuals interested in Hollywood history.

Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

Superb Story and Reading.

I thought the story was well written. From the absolute beginning of the 19-century atomic infancy through Einstein, Borg, and a host of others, to the devastating reality of the end product and the world we are today. I can see why Mr. Rhondes received the PP for this. Let's face it, some of this book had the potential for boredom, however, Mr. Graham delivered the goods with his exceptional reading with emphasis throughout. I've noticed that more than not Audible readers tend to peter out during the later stages of a book. Am I the only one who notices? lol Anyway, you will not be disappointed with this deep book.

Story
Douglas MacArthur was arguably the last American public figure to be worshipped unreservedly as a national hero, the last military figure to conjure up the romantic stirrings once evoked by George Armstrong Custer and Robert E. Lee. But he was also one of America's most divisive figures, a man whose entire career was steeped in controversy. Was he an avatar or an anachronism, a brilliant strategist or a vainglorious mountebank?

A good book, but the reading was terrific!
Reviewed: 10-30-19
The book was the typical MacArthur bio with a bit more in-depth than anything previous. Everything was up-to-date and I very much enjoyed it. Henry Strozier's performance was just terrific. He carried the same level of enthusiasm throughout the reading. No leveling off as I have caught on many audible books. The only issue I heard with the book was the part where MacArthur moves into the Waldorf Astoria after his dismissal from Korea ... there was a repeated sentence. That was the editor's fault and not the reader or writer. I loved it.

Story
Called a great book worthy of a great man, this definitive biography of the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet in World War II is considered the best book ever written about Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Highly respected by both the civilian and naval communities, Nimitz was sometimes overshadowed by more colorful warriors in the Pacific such as MacArthur and Halsey. Potter's lively and authoritative style fleshes out Admiral Nimitz's personality to help listeners appreciate the contributions he made as the principle architect of Japan's defeat.

A great listen! Try it, you'll love it!

I very much enjoyed this title. Nimitz did what had to be done in WW2 to win, but he did it without being in the limelight like other leaders of the time. A very humble man always watching out so as not to step on toes. Mike Chamberlain's reading is understandable and adds a nice pace to the story. He doesn't add a great deal of life to the text, but that is his style and it worked very well for "Nimitz". Thanks

Story
The extraordinary career of George Catlett Marshall - America’s most distinguished soldier - statesman since George Washington - whose selfless leadership and moral character influenced the course of two world wars and helped define the American century. Set against the backdrop of five major conflicts - two world wars, Palestine, Korea, and the Cold War - Marshall's education in military, diplomatic, and political power, replete with their nuances and ambiguities, runs parallel with America's emergence as a global superpower.

Unexpectedly Great!
Reviewed: 10-08-19
I must admit, I wasn't expecting much from a book regarding General Marshall's life. I apologize, this was great. The reading made a great book better! I love it when the reader comes across as telling the story first hand. The pitch, pronunciation, and pauses were spot on. There were a few parts that were spliced in I noticed but to me, it didn't take away from experiencing the man behind the Marshall Plan.
