I don't often write reviews, and I also don't return books often. This book was interesting at first, but then became very tedious. I didn't care for any of the characters and felt they were very self-centered. I became impatient with the repetitiveness of the the conversations, and finally realized I didn't even care to find out the solution to the so-called mystery. I felt freed when I quit listening.

I like legal suspense novels, and I liked the story line of this book. But there were enough implausibilities that I found them distracting. I won't mention them because they would be spoilers to the story. I think I got this book at a discount; I wouldn't want to spend a full credit on it.

Story
In the most authoritative book ever written about Apollo, David Whitehouse reveals the true drama behind the mission, telling the story in the words of those who took part - based around exclusive interviews with the key players. This enthralling book takes us from the early rocket pioneers to the shock America received from the Soviets' launch of the first satellite, Sputnik; from the race to put the first person into space, through President Kennedy's enthusiasm and later doubts, to the astronauts' intense competition to leave the first footprint.

Not what it was cracked up to be
Reviewed: 07-25-19
I have read or listened to many books about various aspects of space exploration. I had thought, based on the title, that this book would be an in-depth focus on Apollo 11, and I bought the Audible version just a number of days after the book’s publication-- before any reviews were available.
Apollo 11 was not discussed until about ¾ of the way through the book. Much of the preceding chapters discussed the US/Soviet space race and also gave details about the earlier Apollo missions. After the Apollo 11 discussion, there were chapters discussing the later Apollo missions. I understand that some background is needed in order to better understand Apollo 11 itself, but for someone like me who has read several background books, I felt a bit “cheated” that this book didn’t deliver Apollo 11 in any more than a relatively cursory way.
Since the book was just released on June 11, 2019, I can’t help but wonder if it was named “Apollo 11” in hopes of cashing in on the increased interest in Apollo 11 with its 50th Anniversary happening in July.
The Publisher’s Summary calls this book “The most authoritative book on Apollo ever written.” I do not agree and feel that “A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts,” by Andrew Chaikin was much more in-depth and the information was better presented.
I understand that the narrator is English, likely because the author is English. But it would have been great if he had learned to pronounce all the names of the astronauts. It was grating and distracting for him to mispronounce the names that we grew up hearing in the U.S. Actually, since the target audience is probably Americans, an American narrator would have been a more natural choice.

Fantastic Book, narration too slow
Reviewed: 05-16-19
I absolutely loved this Audible book! There were so many fascinating details about the presidents' families that I never had heard before, and the book also gave so many details about the White House. My only complaint was that the narrator read the book very slowly. After the first few minutes, I thought I was going to pull my hair out because the reading seemed so plodding. But speeding the narration up to 1.25 made it a perfect listen for me.

I am a big Dr. Fuhrman fan, and I follow his Nutritarian guidelines in my eating practices. I have almost all of his books. This book is interesting and thought provoking. My major complaint is that the narrator mispronounced so many words--particularly the medical words, but even many well-known words. It was very distracting. I am a bit surprised that Dr. Fuhrman allowed this audiobook to be published with all of the mistaken pronunciations. I would have preferred to read the print version of this book.

I was never supposed to be a rock star. I had my life all planned out for me. Play football in college. Go to the NFL. Marry my high school sweetheart and live happily ever after. I broke both our hearts that day when I told her I was leaving. I was young. I made the right decision for me, but the wrong decision for us. I've poured my soul into my music, but I've never forgotten her. Her smell, her smile. And now I'm going back. After ten years. I hope I can explain that after all this time. I still want her to be my forever girl.

Any additional comments?
This story has a predictable story line and was so slow-moving and repetitive that I could be doing dishes and not hear some of the dialogue but realize that it didn't matter at all. The narration was so tedious that I sped it up, but I felt like I couldn't get through the story quickly enough. I find it curious that some have commented that the female narrator spoke too quickly, and others said she spoke too slowly. I think initially she must have read the story too fast, and the production company then slowed down the soundtrack. Well, I would take too fast any day over how her voice sounded.

Gene Kranz was present at the creation of America's manned space program and was a key player in it for three decades. As a flight director in NASA's Mission Control, Kranz witnessed firsthand the making of history. He participated in the space program from the early days of the Mercury program to the last Apollo mission, and beyond. He endured the disastrous first years when rockets blew up and the United States seemed to fall further behind the Soviet Union in the space race.

Absorbing book!
Reviewed: 02-24-14
What made the experience of listening to Failure Is Not an Option the most enjoyable?
I am old enough to remember many of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo flights and all the excitement they brought. This book helped me to get a much better picture of the events of these missions and to more fully appreciate the immense complexity of space travel. Gene Krantz wrote this book in such a way that even though I knew the outcome of each of the flights, I still felt like I was on the "edge of my seat" waiting to hear how each of them turned out! The book included enough technical details that it would interest those with a science background, but it explained the details so well that it is understandable to non-science people.
Danny Campbell was an excellent reader of this book. I had trouble remembering it wasn't really Gene Krantz talking to me!

If you could sum up The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon in three words, what would they be?
I have been a faithful listener of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books for years. I also have the print versions of most of the books in the series, but I prefer to listen because of Lisette Lecat's beautiful narration. I savor each of these books, and I kind of ration myself in listening in order to help the book last longer! I eagerly anticipate the next book in the series.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I received this book as a freebie from Audible in a Valentine's promotional. I listened to it on a 3-hour drive one afternoon, so it worked well for that. I found the story to be interesting enough to help the time pass but not interesting enough that I would have wanted to pay for it.
