Story
My transition into a supernatural creature was the only reason I survived the apocalypse. I thought that was the worst I’d ever have to endure, but I was definitely wrong. With half the human population wiped out and a majority of the survivors developing a power of their own, the non-gifted humans aren’t happy with their station in life. My brother and I have to go on the run from humans who want to steal our magical blood for a power-inducing serum.

Great start to the series!

I am loving more Black heroines in these urban fantasy series! I have loved UF’s for many years and have long wanted to see us kick ass with the rest of the ladies. This was a great start and I am excited for the next book.
Story is solid. World building is good but I would love more descriptions of the towns (my own preference). I really like the characters and want to know more about each one of them. The narrator did a solid job but some of the male voices were hard to distinguish at times. Not a dealbreaker at all. I love the representation of many types of humans and paranormal beings. Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Great Story. Wonderful world.

I very much enjoyed this book. It was recommended to me by my longtime bestie and I scoffed at first. Never been a huge King fan but also had never really given him a chance.
So glad I did. Great narration. I loved the seamless way Seth Numrich gave a unique texture and volume to every character.
Worth the time and credit for sure!

Amazing story. Wish the narrator was better.

First off, I am NOT mad at the narrator. Great job! I know I couldn’t do it 😂
That said, for those of us who have been on this Magic ride since the beginning, it feels off to have all these names be pronounced it a different way.
So a note to the producers of the book. Your talent is on point. Perhaps giving some direction to the pronunciation of some of our key characters would set them up to win big.
The story did not disappoint. I loved how we were able see the evolution of so many characters and still stay focused on the main plot.
Cannot wait for the next one!

BDB just keeps getting better!

I have read all of the BDB books and this one is my favorite! JR Ward sure knows how tell a tale that wakes you up inside and launches you into a world that is terrifying and compelling and that is just the relationship part. John and Xhex made me laugh and cry too many times to count. The "Big Picture" aspect of the series is amzing! I love the different take on vampires. There are some social lessons to be learned here too! We all have the same basic needs and hopes for ourselves and those we love. That is too cool. I would like to applaud JR Ward too for making the relationship between Quinn and Blay no different than any other. I found myself realting to the relationship on a very basic level. Back to that basic need thing again;) I love this series and so do all the people I recomended it too!
