I liked it

It’s my first reverse harem book series. I wasn’t disappointed. The only irritating thing, which is not even that bad, is the change in narrator for the FMC.

And it certainly isn't the only point of confusion for the young girl. Because though she's made her choice between Dorian and Chaol, the ways of the heart are never simple...

I actually enjoyed this book very much. I listened on audible and I was happy with the narrator. Craig Bowles American accent gave me a little giggle but overall, it was good narration.
The story is good too. Set in the past and the future so that was different. I was able to listen for hours and was totally engaged in the story the entire time. I recommend this book!

Story
Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

Stina Nielsen is a fantastic narrator! She really knows how to recite a story!
This book is really good too. Slow at first but once the action started, it was hard to stop listening! The fighting scenes were particularly graphic and the author did it in such a way that my facial expressions reflected every nasty detail... from what my kids told me anyway.
Loved it, looking forward to the next one. Which thankfully, is already out.

To get him back, she would have to poison one of her patients. At first, she didn’t believe that her husband had been taken from the conference he was attending, but soon she discovered that the kidnappers really had Darren. I listened to most of the book through Audible but then read the last parts. I will say, I liked reading it vs listening. For me, the narrator's tone didn't match the seriousness of the story. I found that reading the last part was much more enjoyable.
The story was ok. I think it was too fast paced with not a lot of details. I felt no connection to the people in the story. I thought it was going to be more thrilling I was left feeling disappointed.

While I like certain things about this story, there were definitely things I did not. I’m not really into religion but hearing the different characters talk about their beliefs was interesting. I liked the historic elements like the LaLaurie house and I just liked hearing about New Orleans in general. I would love to visit one day.
But Sophia, she just irked me. She’s a runner and I don’t mean physically. She runs from everything. It’s only when she stops doubting herself that things fall into place. It took a long for her to realize that. All the self doubt. Geez, I really wanted to smack her. Thankfully, she put on her big girl panties and got her life on track.
Narrator was ok. I had to speed her up a bit to keep me engaged.
Overall, a good story though and I will most likely continue the series because I want to see what she can do now that she believes in herself!
