Historia
Amara was once the beautiful Princess of Egypt. Now, 4,000 years later, she and her coffin are merely prized exhibits of the Charles Ward Museum. If you were to look at her today, you would see only a brittle bundle of bones and dried skin. But looks can be very deceiving, as Barney, the museum's night watchman, finds out. You cannot kill what is already dead.

Dark, wicked, not for the faint of heart.

Highly entertaining, I finished this in less than 24 hours. This would be my number two pick for Richard Laymon, with Savage being my personal favorite.

The rural town of Grandville is to host The Travelling Vampire Show, featuring the only known vampire in captivity. Janks Field, where the show will take place, has been declared off-limits because of its sinister history, but there are three local teenagers who don't want to miss the performance.

This has a lot of teenage angst that will probably be annoying to some people. However, we've all experienced some, if not all of the same awkward situations ourselves even if you don't want to admit it. It'll turn some off for sure. If you don't mind it, can get past it. etc, this is a fun little story that had quite a few twists and turns that I definitely didn't see coming. This is worth a credit in my opinion and the performance was easy listening start to finish.

Interesting. Though, not fulfilling.
Revisado: 07-24-24
It's definitely more a short story that had some extra meat put on it's bones - pun intended. Though, that's about where it ends. It's a decent story but doesn't really go anywhere and didn't really say anything. It's worth a read if you can get it on a good sale, but I wouldn't use a credit on it. This was the third or fourth book by Laymon I've listened to and this is definitely the weakest in terms of story. Good performance and worth a read at a discount.

Pretty good.
Revisado: 07-24-24
It's another Bentley Little book that is definitely worth a read but isn't his best work. I enjoyed it for sure but probably wouldn't listen or read it again. If you are a Little fan, I recommend it. If this if your first of his, then I'd recommend others in lieu. Notably, The Ignored, The Walking, The House, or if you don't mind some seriously dark content - The Dominion.

No one in town has ever seen anything like it: a slimy, mobile tube of glistening yellow flesh with dull, staring eyes and an obscene, probing mouth. But the real horror is not what it looks like, or what it does when it invades your flesh - but what it makes you do to others.

Might as well have been read by a robot...
Revisado: 07-18-24
I don't want to be rude or callous, but this was legitimately a tough book to finish - solely because the narrator was so distracting. Maybe it was his cadence, or monotone-ness, or some other facet of his speech that made this difficult. I listened to this at 1.35x speed and it still felt slow. I think I'd recommend an even faster speed if you really are willing to give this a shot.
The story was pretty good, not great but definitely worth a read. I do suggest reading it yourself though and not trying the audible version because of the reasons I stated above.
This was my second Richard Laymon book and I'm finding I do like his work it seems. Next book is The Traveling Vampire Show. Hopefully that provides a better audible experience.

Jordan helps kids on the run find their way back home. He's good at that. He should be - he's a runaway himself. Sometimes he helps the kids in other stranger ways. He looks like a regular teenager, but he's not. He acts like he's not exactly human, but he is. He treads the line between mundane reality and the world of the supernatural. Desdaemona also knows the nonhuman world far too well.

100% Not sure what other reviewers listened to.
Revisado: 09-19-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narrator did a fine job with the entire book in my opinion. Negative reviews about it not having a plot - what the... what are you listening to? This has a great story and a very good through line beginning to end.
The author doesn't hand hold you at all with the world building and characters and I legitimately couldn't have appreciated that more. Things are learned dynamically and in a way that makes sense for the characters. There's no "info dump" or expository mess. It was hours in before you get a real sense as to who is who and what is what I'm relation to them. Good writing.
There are multiple reviews that complained about sex or assault in the book - it's a horror novel (though personally I think it fits mystery just as well) and the MC is a 17 year old male with 17 year old hormones and the author doesn't spend time throwing anything at all in anyone's face. Instead, he writes about afterthoughts or experiences with in all honesty is very dialed back in terms of description. If you are looking for a book with more of that in it, you will in fact be very disappointed. As for assault - there are vampires, demons, and all other manners of characters in this book and they don't all get along. If you have sensitive sensibilities - maybe choose a different genre?
This was a great read. I finished it in less than a day and enjoyed it. Give it a shot. It's worth your time.

Can't recommend it enough if you have children.
Revisado: 03-25-22
I listened to this with my children on our drives around town. I found myself wanting to continue it even when they weren't around and thinking that it would be ok if I just listened to another chapter because I could go back when I was back in the car with them. I love fantasy books and this was exceptionally performed and the story was entertaining and the characters (especially the dragon) were wonderfully fleshed out. I loved it. My kids loved it.
I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy novels.

In the small town of Montgomery, Arizona, Kyle Decker's book shop is barely breaking even. When a bank opens in the empty storefront next door, he hopes the new establishment will bring in more foot traffic. Trouble is, nobody has ever heard of the First People's Bank, and the local branch has appeared mysteriously overnight. Their incentives for new customers seem reasonable...at first. But is it a coincidence when Kyle's wife has her identity stolen and his son receives emails that seem to know his private thoughts? Or when the manager of a competing bank dies a gruesome death?

Huge Little fan. This was decent.
Revisado: 03-25-22
This book is worth a read if you're a fan of the author, or the performer. Both are usually very good. This book I felt just dragged, it took me several days, if not even a week to finish and it wrapped itself up very abruptly I thought. It's not his best work but it's good enough for a listen for sure.
I recommend it to any Little or horror fan.

Brad Woods has performed a lot of autopsies, but never one like this. The body is purged of all blood. Fear has made Sue Wing run from the darkened school and into night, a fear so powerful she can only name it using the Cantonese myths of her grandmother: Cup-hu-girngsi, the corspe who drinks blood. Reporters like Rich Carter don't believe in the supernatural, but all the signs are pointing to the same conclusion: a vampire is stalking the streets of Rio Verde. No, Rich Carter doesn't believe in such things. Not yet.

Revisado: 03-25-22
Might be a bit biased as I have read almost every book by this author. I found the book easy to pay attention to, and the performer was beyond exceptional. The story was good and wrapped itself up nicely. All the characters were distinct in their own rights and well developed in my opinion. Things happen that you're not expecting and they bear weight because you can feel for the characters Little has created.
I recommend this to any horror fan.
