Story
Mackenzie Walker wasn't planning on using her college radio show to solve a decades-old murder, but when she receives an anonymous tip that the wrong man may have taken the fall, she can't resist digging deeper. It doesn't take long for Mackenzie to discover gaps in the official story. Several potential witnesses conveniently disappeared soon after the murder. The victim, a glamorous heiress and founder of a Kentucky horse-racing dynasty, left behind plenty of enemies. And the cops don't seem particularly interested in discussing any of it.

Loved the case presented and the story-telling of the tale. This is the type of podcast I would listen to & I devoured this in less than 24 hours. I’m not so certain I like the format. That being said, I DO frequently listen to podcasts as well as audio books. This “combo” is something I can likely get used to.

Loved the podcast hook. This story was both outlandish, yet terrifying in its plausibility. Did not take long for me to become interested in how this would turn out in the end. I would have appreciated more details about the end-of-the-book thoughts of the woman responsible for all the chaos. But I presume that brevity was intentional to keep the reader thinking.

If you’re into sugary sweet dialog and happy endings, you will love this story. If you’re not a believer in the “everyday girl marries her Prince & they live happily ever after” motif, better check your attitude before reading. This reader, experienced in real life (not fairy tales), found the book to be sappy and the female protagonist a cliche from another world. I know, I know. That’s the kind of book it’s supposed to be. I should not have talked myself into reading it. So, enjoy it if that’s your kind of book. You won’t be disappointed in the happy ending.

Shaking my head & effectively speechless — I enjoyed almost all of this book’s twists and turns. I devoured the bits of juicy storyline slowly unearthed, bit by bit as the story progressed. Then, in the last, what, 30?, minutes, comes an ending so implausible it made me feel like the whole thing was a waste of my time. Uggggh.

Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be. But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

The story was quite involved, with many characters across different time periods. It definitely kept my interest. The supernatural element required me to set aside some personal beliefs to buy into parts of the story. I was pleased with the way things ended except for the very last bit. I can understand the author’s wish to leave herself a path for continuing the story, but the teaser left me more sad than intrigued. Also, personal pet peeve, but, how many times can the characters speak “louder than intended”? Geesh!

Love a Setting in Minnesota
Reviewed: 02-03-21
The mystery was pretty good — a bit convoluted, but more than tolerable. Loved that the story was set in several different areas of Minnesota. I was highly irritated that the narrator was obviously not told how to pronounce “Wayzata”. For someone listening who lives in the Twin Cities, hearing Wayzata mispronounced over and over was grating. Love the author’s humor.

When You Finish Saving the World

This is a fascinating book. I may listen again bc I’m quite sure there are things I missed. So true to life — the complex, assuming & usually over-reaching inner worlds of our own minds do not subconsciously leave room for the perspectives of others. We are so busy thinking we already know how the other person thinks/feels, we jump straight to searching for remedies, answers and social protocols. If we could slow down and leave a little time and room for others to tell us the truth about how they feel, would the world be a kinder, less confusing place?
