Story
The Nazi regime preached an ideology of physical, mental, and moral purity. But as Norman Ohler reveals in this gripping new history, the Third Reich was saturated with drugs. On the eve of World War II, Germany was a pharmaceutical powerhouse, and companies such as Merck and Bayer cooked up cocaine, opiates, and, most of all, methamphetamines, to be consumed by everyone from factory workers to housewives to millions of German soldiers.

Explains a lot

This is an amazingly well written, researched and narrated book. The author makes it clear when he doesn’t have all the facts and is making likely conclusions, but the book is mostly fact based and the emissions in Dr. Morell’s diary are pretty self-explanatory. It explains the high and lows of Hitler and the whole society, and their unwillingness to see reality and fight until the bitter end unlike almost any other nation in the history of warfare. Even if you think you know everything about World War II and the Third Reich, this book will give you a new perspective and make you reflect on the current world situation.

Story
Like many Germans, Berlin schoolboy Erwin Bartmann fell under the spell of the Zeitgeist cultivated by the Nazis. Convinced he was growing up in the best country in the world, he dreamt of joining the Leibstandarte, Hitler's elite Waffen SS unit. Tall, blond, blue-eyed, and just 17-years-old, Erwin fulfilled his dream on Mayday 1941, when he gave up his apprenticeship at the Glaser bakery in Memeler Strasse and walked into the Lichterfelde barracks in Berlin as a raw, volunteer recruit.

No apologies

It’s pretty clear the author never quite let go or denounced what the Third Reich stood for. Being proud for girls wanting to make babies with him in the final moments of Hitler’s dictatorship or dreaming of the Eagle and other Nazi symbolism still 70 years later tell a story their own. However, he was a product of his time, growing up in that environment I can understand. The story is interesting, well written and not too long. Top 5 German WW2 memoirs.

A story that takes a turn

Where does The Forgotten Soldier rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the best audiobooks I've listened to. You can really feel immersed in the shoes of a soldier who got thrown in the middle of all the craziness of World War 2.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Forgotten Soldier?
How his story developed from a convoy guard to see some of the most grueling experiences on the Eastern Front.
What about Derek Perkins’s performance did you like?
Very good in portraying the emotions of the writer.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It got me reflecting on this world and how not to ever repeat this mistake of all out war.
