Story
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Gotta love Martha!

I really loved the historical snapshot of Martha Ballard’s life and career as a midwife. The authors note was excellent and helped me understand the truth/fiction portions of the story. Some of the story line went a little far…kind of had me rolling my eyes at the implausibility, however, it was all entertaining!

Story
Down a narrow alley in the small coastal town of Mallow Island, South Carolina, lies a stunning cobblestone building comprised of five apartments. It's called The Dellawisp and it's named after the tiny turquoise birds who, alongside its human tenants, inhabit an air of magical secrecy. When Zoey Hennessey comes to claim her deceased mother's apartment at The Dellawisp, she meets her quirky, enigmatic neighbors including a girl on the run, a grieving chef whose comfort food does not comfort him, two estranged middle-aged sisters, and three ghosts. Each with their own story.

Not for me

I didn’t like the narration of this book at all. The accents felt off to me. Also, the writing/story just never really interested me. A lot of explaining how people felt instead of showing actions.

Story
Running with Scissors is the true story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of being Anne Sexton) gave him away to be raised by her psychiatrist, a dead ringer for Santa and a lunatic in the bargain.

Random Music

This is a good memoir. Not eloquently written, but interesting because it is such a shocking upbringing! The reason I rate the performance lower want the reader but the random music here and there throughout. It didn’t seem to go with the content of the books, just was strange.
