This should have been better.
Revisado: 02-06-25
The first third of the book held promise but soon I was aggravated then intensely put off by the demeaning portrayal of Lakshmi. I’m not sure if it was the tone of the narrator or the writing that was so patronizing . Maggie thinks she’s crossed into a friendship with her but she never speaks to or thinks of Lakshmi as an equal. Neither did I find the story profound as others seemed to. As a person who’s worked with immigrants and refugees for over 20 years I found this portrayal of an immigrant somewhat insulting.

Fantastic story
Revisado: 12-31-24
Loved the story , the strict conventions of British society at the turn of the last century set against that of Italy . The beauty and ugliness of both , the sharp twist at the end . But often the awkward narration got in the way. Sentences seamed to evaporate before their conclusion leaving me straining to understand what was said. It was frustrating.

Historia
Published in 1904, The Golden Bowl is the last completed novel of Henry James. In it, the widowed American Adam Verver is in Europe with his daughter Maggie. They are rich, finely appreciative of European art and culture, and deeply attached to each other. Maggie has all the innocent charm of so many of Jamess young American heroines. She is engaged to Amerigo, an impoverished Italian prince; he must marry money, and as his name suggests, an American heiress is the perfect solution.

Extraordinary Story
Revisado: 09-18-24
It was, at first, an adjustment to the pages dedicated to minutia of feelings and things being alluded to rather than stated outright ( so different than now ).. but once my ear and brain adapted I was hooked . The patience, perseverance and brilliance of Maggie winning all in the end . Extraordinary story.

Pedantic and predictable from the start. Was expecting much more as I’ve loved Reichl’s previous books As a novel for teens or young adults it might be more appreciated.

Historia
Traveling from Iran to North Korea, from the Dalai Lama’s Himalayas to the ghostly temples of Japan, Pico Iyer brings together a lifetime of explorations to upend our ideas of utopia and ask how we might find peace in the midst of difficulty and suffering. Does religion lead us back to Eden or only into constant contention? Why do so many seeming paradises turn into warzones? And does paradise exist only in the afterworld – or can it be found in the here and now?

Historia
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Historia
They were on a lark, three teenage girls speeding across the greens on a “borrowed” golf cart, at night, drunk. The cart crashes and one of the girls is killed instantly. The driver, Jo, flees the hometown that has turned against her and enrolls at a prestigious boarding school. Her past weighs on her. She is responsible for the death of her best friend. She has tipped her parents’ rocky marriage into demise. His Favorites reveals the interior life of a young woman determined to navigate the treachery in a new world. The story cooly describes a series of shattering events and the system that failed to protect her.

Tedious
Revisado: 08-24-23
I chose this title because it was reviewed so positively by Ann Patchett but after listening I wonder if we read the same book. From the second chapter I was constantly tempted to ditch it but plodded through thinking it would redeem itself but nope. Sometimes I wasn’t sure if it was the droll and monotonous narration or the miserable story that was so void of variation of feeling . It’s just a sad slog with one saving grace; it’s short.
