Lacking, like a majority of Warcraft novels
Reviewed: 04-22-22
Enjoyable enough for a reader who is already well-versed in the overarching lore of Warcraft, but as a novel, it leaves much to be desired. Golden has decades of lore to cover in this book, making all the major story points hit on feel hollow and unimportant. The most fleshed out part of the novel was the first half to do with Sylv's younger days prior to Arthas, but unfortunately it was also the most boring. All story points hit after that felt like a blur.
From a narration standpoint, I enjoyed the in-game actress who voices Sylv, but her male voices are quite bad for the most part. Small nitpick, but it also annoyed me how there were always so many pauses near the end of her dialogue. It was like she was running out of breath, maybe?
I realize that I shouldn't put such high hopes on Warcraft novels that primarily leave story telling in-game and that prior released books were meant to focus on events that this one glosses over, so I can't hate it. However, this particular novel feels like, again, a hollow retread of Sylv's story just to slightly patch up the mess of a story Blizz has been writing.

Story
After decades of internecine warfare, the tribes of the Tiste Edur have at last united under the Warlock King of the Hiroth. There is peace - but it has been exacted at a terrible price: a pact made with a hidden power whose motives are at best suspect, at worst, deadly. To the south, the expansionist kingdom of Lether, eager to fulfill its long-prophesized renaissance as an Empire reborn, has enslved all its less-civilized neighbors with rapacious hunger. All, that is, save one - the Tiste Edur. And it must be only a matter of time before they too fall.

Probably my favorite so far

5 books in and this one is either at the top or a close 2nd to Memories of Ice, which I definitely wasn't expecting after having to go to ANOTHER entirely new continent with only a single returning character mid way thru a 10 book series. Really enjoyed it!

Story
The incessant war between the bickering city states of Quon Tali rages. So engrossed are the warring lords and princes in their own petty feuds that few notice that an upstart mage from Dal Hon has gained control of the southern seas. Kellanved could not care less about any of this petty politicking or strategy or war. Something other and altogether more mysterious has caught his attention and he - together with a reluctant and his decidedly skeptical friend Dancer - traverse continents and journey through the Realms.

I went into this assuming it was a trilogy. I can't imagine this one being the last in the series. Hopeful for more and tying up loose ends with a future book or two more.

Story
Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian - leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

Slow paced for a 1st novel in a trilogy

Entertaining, but an obvious set up for future books. Not much happens. Great narrator. Will give 2nd book a listen, as I expect story to progress faster.
