I did not stop listening from start to finish except to sleep. If you doubt the price paid by the individuals who have come forward against Putin's president (NOT MINE!), read this book. The authors are bright and careful writers, the story is about the real crime of the century, and although I have been following this story carefully since the 2016 election I learned tons more from this book, as well as having some dots connected that I hadn't quite been able to see before. I intend to read it again several times just to be able to absorb all the information and I look forward to it. Between the writing and the excellent narration by Mark Deakins, it's a pleasurable listen as well as hugely informative. I see a movie in Simpson's and Fritsch's future, so much more to this story than there was to the Deep Throat story. Kudos guys.

Story line--original. Formal--original. Narration--spot on. What a terrific listening experience comparable (in my opinion) only to another Audible original Evil Eye. Both of these presentations are unforgettable and I'm always forgetting that I'd already read something. Kudos to Hutchinson and to Pressley. Encore, please!!

I read so many books that go on and on and on until I'm actually glad they are finally finished, but The Foreign Correspondent actually left me wanting more. The story also is about an aspect of WWII about which I had no real prior familiarity with--Italy and Italian resistance. The characters are vivid, the environs palpable. The narration was gorgeous and I'm sure I will listen to this book again just for that. And did I mention, I want more!

A Must Read for History (and Mystery) Lovers

I've read scads of books on Medieval history and had a good idea of the hardships of everyday life, the plague and the squalor, etc., etc., but nevertheless my eyes were bugging out of my head at a lot of what I learned from this book. The scholarship is outstanding, the tone is often irreverent and the narration is pitch perfect. If this isn't my very favorite historical listen, it is certainly right up there and I suspect that it will remain the most unforgettable book I've read of any genre. And it doesn't stop with history. The final chapters were about contemporary individuals and my eyes were still bugging.

This is a very real history and I loves my history real!!

What did you love best about A Higher Loyalty?

Insights into the workings of our government, the humor and the shining intelligence of the author.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Higher Loyalty?

It was chock full of them. Not a dull moment throughout.

Which scene was your favorite?

The chapter dealing with the struggle to de-legalize torture during the Bush administration.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Which is the worse torture, waterboarding or trying to work with Donald Trump!

Any additional comments?

No wonder Trump hates this guy--Comey is bigger than him in body, mind and spirit.

I very nearly did not purchase this book having read a surfeit of Borgia (et al) history, but Dunant's book combined with the exceptionally talented performance of Nicholas Bolton brought astounding vitality to Machiavelli, the Borgias and all the many peripheral people of their time and place that, unlike so many a drier histories, I could not stop listening. They absolutely brought the era to life, alive and juicy!

I only bought this book because it was a 2 for 1 selection. I'd not heard of the author or narrator but I was hooked within minutes. Very funny laugh out loud dialogues, fabulous and diverse characters, classic British murder, everything I love in a book. The narrator was brilliant. I'll be looking for more audiobooks by both men.

The Plantagenets Audiobook By Dan Jones cover art

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A more balanced presentation of the fascinating Plantagenet women who were barely mentioned as well as more insight into the personalities and personal lives. This is a male presentation of history and a desert dry recitation of already written to death facts. The narration is a persistent monotonous droning. Not even a lance through the eye causes a change in pitch or inflection.

Has The Plantagenets turned you off from other books in this genre?

Absolutely not.
