Historia
In the 1950s, Oscar Hammerstein is asked to write the lyrics to a musical based on the life of a woman named Maria von Trapp. He’s intrigued to learn that she was once a novice who hoped to live quietly as an Austrian nun before her abbey sent her away to teach a widowed baron’s sickly child. What should have been a ten-month assignment, however, unexpectedly turned into a marriage proposal. And when the family was forced to flee their home to escape the Nazis, it was Maria who instructed them on how to survive using nothing but the power of their voices.

LOVED!

If you love The Sound of Music, you will gobble up this historical novel based on Maria’s life. The narrators are wonderful- I especially appreciated the authentic German accent. The author’s notes at the end are also fascinating.

Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

A beautiful, raw, and important story
Revisado: 05-18-24
Hannah knocked this one out of the park. I’ll admit, this is heavy read. There were times I even got frustrated because the number of horrific things seemed ridiculously unfair- almost unbelievably so. But it was so worth hanging in there. A beautiful story of the power of women friendship, this is also an important story about American history that needed to be told and needs to be read.Huge kudos to Hannah for telling it so well.
(Also— Julia Whelan does a great job narrating.)

Historia
Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office.

A delight.

Best book I’ve read, or listened to, all summer. A true delight. The voices are excellent, such a fun listen. I really hope there is a follow-up to this wonderful debut novel.
