Story
In this dual collection of short stories, Alexander McCall Smith brings his trademark humor and warmth to inventive tales of spying and vengeance. In one story, a spy dropped deep into enemy territory manages to disguise himself—quite convincingly—as a nun. In another, an invitation to join the Vatican Secret Service sends a prospective operative down a rabbit hole of controversy and confusion. A third story finds an author, on the brink of public ruin, seeing the error of his ways after an act of kindness saves the day.

McCall Smith does it again!
Reviewed: 12-11-23
McCall Smith is a GREAT storyteller. Have read most of his books, and I especially like his few books that are not part of a series, such as this one. He explores flawed and interesting characters, but never in a judgmental way. Loved this book!

Story
Taken together, the civilizations of Sumer, Assyria, and Persia have helped form the modern makeup of Mesopotamia, western Asia, and the world. However, to really understand why things are the way they are, it’s important to break up this historical timeline and spend some time learning about each society. Only by doing this will you be able to fully appreciate the powerful impact these ancient peoples had on our modern world.

“Divulian”?

HORRIBLE narrator
Reviewed: 08-07-23
His mispronunciation of so many words REALLY detracted from this book. Even though the historical information was interesting, how is it that the reader used couldn’t correctly pronounce “caveat” or “analogous”? Found it so distracting that I stopped listening in the sixth chapter.

Story
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

Wanted to like this book, but . . .

The premise had promise, but the main character was so whiny. Don't bother with this one.

Story
The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

Vapid sci-fi story
Reviewed: 07-17-18
The story was interesting for the first few chapters, but rapidly became boring and contrived. Really poor character development. If you're a fan of the greats of sci-fi, do yourself a favor and pass this one by.

Story
Something called the “Blue Juice" is coming. For all of us. Luckily, me (Chip Collins), Pete, Nikola Tesla, Bobo, and FBI Agent Gina Phillips are here to kick its ass, and send it back to last Tuesday. Maybe. Or maybe we'll fail, and everyone in the multiverse is doomed. (Seriously, you might want to get that underground bunker ready.) Either way, I've got to get home to Julie and find out – woah, I'm not about to tell you that right here in the book description! TMI, dude.

Get this book! You won’t be sorry

This second novel brilliantly continues the story begun in “Where the Hell is Tesla”. I was so enthralled by that book that I had to get this one as well and was glad I did. The author also does an excellent job of narrating and kept my interest the entire time.
