Story
At the end of the fourth century, as the power of Rome faded and Constantinople became the seat of empire, a new capital city was rising in the West. Here, in Ravenna on the coast of Italy, Arian Goths and Catholic Romans competed to produce an unrivaled concentration of buildings and astonishing mosaics. For three centuries, the city attracted scholars, lawyers, craftsmen, and religious luminaries, becoming a true cultural and political capital.

A Great Take on Oft-Neglected History
Reviewed: 07-01-23
As a lifelong student of medieval European history, I was fascinated by this excursion into history into whose details I had not heretofore ventured. The author brings alive fascinating figures—some familiar, others not—who enlighten the history of what became “early Christendom.” Focusing her narrative on Ravenna allows for a different perspective on a fascinating era.All in all an excellent work of scholarship.

Story
In 2006, an oddball group of bankers, traders and brokers from some of the world's largest financial institutions made a startling realization: Libor - the London interbank offered rate, which determines the interest rates on trillions in loans worldwide - was set daily by a small group of easily manipulated functionaries, and that they could reap huge profits by nudging it to suit their trading portfolios.

A Gripping Story

This is definitely the audio equivalent of a page turner. The story of the LIBOR manipulations is fascinating. The author teases out the ethical questions arising from this scandal and ordinary people all over the world were hurt. That the mastermind went to prison for a long time was appropriate. The fact that his co-conspirators did not was not.it shows how hard it is for the justice system to dispense genuine justice.

Story
Over the last decade, a single innovation has massively fueled digital black markets: cryptocurrency. Crime lords inhabiting lawless corners of the internet have operated more freely—whether in drug dealing, money laundering, or human trafficking—than their analog counterparts could have ever dreamed of. By transacting not in dollars or pounds but in currencies with anonymous ledgers, overseen by no government, beholden to no bankers, these black marketeers have sought to rob law enforcement of their chief method of cracking down on illicit finance: following the money.

Story
They say that history is written by the victors. But not in the case of the most famous dissenter on the Supreme Court. Almost a century after his death, John Marshall Harlan’s words helped end segregation and gave us our civil rights and our modern economic freedom. But his legacy would not have been possible without the courage of Robert Harlan, a slave who John’s father raised like a son in the same household.

So Near
Reviewed: 09-06-22
This is, in so many respects a good biography. It tells the story of its hero well. It has, however, two drawbacks. First, however important the relationship between the justice and Robert Harlan may have been, the latter looms too large in the narrative and his story takes up much too much space in the book.Compared to the life and accomplishments of the justice those of Robert are not comparable and the lengthy sections about him are intrusive to a great degree. Secondly, the author is entirely too preachy. The greatness of Justice Harlan speaks for itself and cannot be enhanced by repeated eulogies. Nonetheless the narrative is well done with respect to Justice Harlan and this book well repays the reading of it.
