Story
What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has.

The author takes the subject of cults and language and informs without judging the people who may have gotten caught up. She breaks down the languages to keep you tethered and informed.

Incredible and unexpected
Reviewed: 09-10-24
This was my first experience with Jonathan Safran Foer’s writing and it’s absolutely brilliant. The narrators also brought this story to life…but as soon as I finished I order the book to read. So many beautiful phrases or lines and stories within stories that it’s worth pouring over it again and again.

Didn’t know what to except but I absolutely loved this book. The narrator made it even better. It was a welcome break from the usual dark true crime stories I listen to. Can’t wait to start the next book in the series.

Story
Masterfully blending elements of psychological suspense and true crime, Jessica Knoll—bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and the writer behind the Netflix adaptation starring Mila Kunis—delivers an “unflinching and evocative” (Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author) thriller in Bright Young Women. The book opens on a Saturday night in 1978, hours before a soon-to-be-infamous murderer descends upon a Florida sorority house with deadly results. The lives of those who survive, including a sorority president and key witness, Pamela Schumacher, are forever changed.

Excellent story telling to the very last word
Reviewed: 03-24-24
I was skeptical about another book about “the defendant” but Jessica Knoll created a beautiful and poignant story that brought life to those so easily forgotten in retellings that focus more on the violence and malevolence. She gave us women we could relate to, empathize with and who we wished could have seen what that might have become.
