Story
It is an ordinary Monday and harried London literary agent Emma is flying out of the door as usual. Preoccupied with work and her ever growing to-do list, she fails to notice her lovely husband Dan seems bereft, her son can barely meet her eye, and her daughter won’t go near her. Even the dog seems sad.

It dragged on forever. Last chapter could have been much sooner. I was bored and if I wasn’t reading for a book club, this might have been one of the few books I didn’t finish.

Story
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Enjoyed listening to the story as the crew traveled West. Pictured many of the place on the ride as I’ve done it many years later.
The caring of the Giraffes was spectacular.

Story
From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history. Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work?

Enjoyed the story & characters. Had to remind myself that this wasn’t one of Larson book based on facts. At the end you learn which characters were really and which were based on people of the times.

Story
In late 2003, in his column in Entertainment Weekly, Stephen King called The Memory of Running "the best novel you won't read this year." This glowing endorsement of the audiobook resulted in Ron McLarty receiving a $2 million two-book deal from Viking Penguin. Also, Warner Brothers has shelled out big bucks for the movie rights to The Memory of Running, for which McLarty will write the script.

What made the experience of listening to The Memory of Running the most enjoyable?
The reading by the author, Ron McLarty, was exceptional. The story pulled me in. I was along for the great adventure. I couldn't stop listening. Usually I just listen when I'm driving. But I listened as I peel the vegtables, and made the beds, and before going to sleep.

Story
Ever since he was small, John Robison had longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits, an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes, had earned him the label "social deviant". No guidance came from his mother or his father. It was no wonder he gravitated to machines, which could, at least, be counted on.

Upbeat and yet...
Reviewed: 11-12-12
Would you consider the audio edition of Look Me in the Eye to be better than the print version?
Listening to the story was upbeat and yet covered a serious subject and John told about his life effected by Aspergers. After reading his brother's book a was a bit concerned it might be to extreme but it really helps define Aspergers and how one can have a happy life. As I couldn't help laughing at many parts in the book. Loved listening to the story!
What did you like best about this story?
The funny vignettes into John's life.
What about Mark Deakins’s performance did you like?
Mark's voice was pleasing and helped lend to the emotion of the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have loved to listen in one sitting but I never have the amount of time. I did turn it on whenever I could!!!!
Any additional comments?
I have already recommended this book to friends.

Story
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Unknown president comes alive but sadly dies
Reviewed: 09-03-12
Where does Destiny of the Republic rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the best book I've listened to. When I mention Garfield, friends say, "the cat." I've learned he was a great president and was sadly killed by a mad man and his own doctors.
It is so much more than just about the president as the story is intertwined with the historical figures of the time.
What does Paul Michael bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Paul Michael's makes the words come alive with his inflections.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the doctors probed the president right after he was shot in the train station.
