Repetitive
Reviewed: 04-15-24
This book had potential. What could have been an interesting hook - a female sports agent - was left behind the author's repetitive narrative about the physical attributes of the main characters. We get it, she's cute and adorable and he's an intelligent hunk of a guy, but repeating this more than once in each and every chapter clouded what could have been an interesting and more in depth plot.

Story
Katherine, an ambitious New York City attorney, gets diagnosed with a concussion and must be monitored for forty-eight hours to make sure it doesn’t get worse. Unfortunately, she forgot to update her emergency contact, so the person they call is her ex-husband, Tom. Unable to be left alone, Katherine reluctantly agrees to travel to Chicago with him for the holidays. But thanks to a blizzard, what should have been a quick plane ride turns into an antagonistic overnight misadventure that stirs up old feelings even as Tom prepares to propose to his girlfriend on Christmas Eve.

Predictable

Some of this was predictable and repetitive . The story is loosely based on the movie “Planes, Trains & Automobiles”. Cute and clever dialogue kept me interested.

Story
Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her twin. Too bad for Naomi, her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with a niece she didn’t know she had. Now, she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no home - and an 11-year-old to take care of. Since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least Knox can do is help her out. And just as soon as she's out of trouble, he can get back to his peaceful, solitary life. That’s the plan, until the trouble turns to real danger.

Engaging story and characters

Easy and entertaining listen with a good narrator. The storyline had just enough depth and a few twists to stay interesting. The numerous explicit sex scenes really detracted from the story and I skipped through them. And, of course, there was the always present minor LGBTQ character.

Story
When Mallory Blessing's son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he's not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It's the late spring of 2020 and Jake's wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election. There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other?

Disappointing
Reviewed: 06-30-20
I’ve loved every book written by Elin Hildebrand. This one just missed the mark. The reason the two main characters can’t be together and have to resort to the “same time next year” is flimsy at best. Why Jake married Ursula is still a mystery to me. I did take exception to the Authors political bias and the Supreme Court chapters as they were completely lifted from the Kavanaugh hearings.

Would you try another book from Mary Alice Monroe and/or Mary Alice Monroe?
Yes, because her other books are much better written than this one.
What do you think your next listen will be?
"Dead Certain" by Adam Mitzer
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mary Alice Monroe?
I don't recall the names of narrators, but I'm not in love with Mary Alice Monroe as a narrator. There was very little inflation when she changed characters.
Could you see Beach House for Rent being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Quite possibly. I don't pay much attention to Actresses so I wouldn't have a clue!
Any additional comments?
I like all of her books, this one just didn't hit the mark for me. I didn't especially like the author as a narrator.

Missed the Mark
Reviewed: 08-21-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It was too repetitive which eventually became tedious.
What could Jane Green have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I liked the story but I didn't like hearing about Emma's thoughts about Dominic because they were always the same. She loves him, he loves her. I get it.
Which character – as performed by Jane Green – was your favorite?
They were all well done. I did get a kick out of Emma's Mom.
Did Falling inspire you to do anything?
I liked her message and felt it was presented rather well.
