Story
Seabiscuit was one of the most electrifying and popular attractions in sports history and the single biggest newsmaker in the world in 1938, receiving more coverage than FDR, Hitler, or Mussolini. But his success was a surprise to the racing establishment, which had written off the crooked-legged racehorse with the sad tail.

An Epic Story, Masterfully Narrated
Reviewed: 06-15-22
For one who has never been to the track, nor had any interest in horse racing, I must admit this was one of the most thrilling stories I’ve ever read. I didn’t know that horses have personalities, or how jockeys and trainers and owners must work together as a team. There is way more to horse racing than I ever imagined, and the story of Seabiscuit tells it all from modest beginnings to triumphant endings, sparing no pain along the way!

Story
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

I love this author. I love how his writing has evolved. I love growing older with him. And I love his family.

Story
When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, 10 years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant.

Horrible.

I loved the Gold Coast. I can't believe this was written by the same author. I don't understand how one book could be so good and the sequel could be so bad. Why does he keep saying the same thing over and over and over in this book? So frustrating.
